Alrewas Surgery is looking for an experienced Nurse to join our nursing team. The post is for 15-18 hours per week. A long-standing, well respected GP practice covering a semi‑rural area between Lichfield and Burton on Trent, with easy vehicle access as we are situated just off the A38 close to the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas Surgery aims to offer a welcoming, high quality GP service to all its patients.

Main

duties of the job

To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team. Supported by senior nurses within the practice, the role will focus on supporting patients to be healthy through health promotion and protection, encouraging healthy living options and screening activities. It may also include other appropriate duties with due regard to current training and development.

About us

Alrewas Surgery is a semi‑rural practice serving nearly 8,000 patients. We are a staff team of 27 including GPs, nurses, HCA, clinical pharmacists and administrative and management staff.

Job responsibilities

Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nurse and GPs to promote health and wellbeing.

Such responsibilities may include:

Basic nursing duties
  • General observations e.g. temperature, BP, pulse, height, weight, BMI
  • Venepuncture
  • Assessment and care of patients requiring wound care
  • Removal of sutures/clips
  • Urinalysis and blood sugar analysis
  • Specimen collection and requesting basic pathology tests, urine culture, swabs etc
  • Recording ECGs
  • Peak flow readings
  • Home BP monitoring
  • Ear syringing
  • Dietary advice and weight management
  • New patient medicals.
  • Cytology, immunisations and vaccinations including childhood immunisations and flu, pneumonia and B12 vaccinations in line with DoH advice and PGDs
  • Long‑term chronic disease monitoring
  • Advise, support and, where appropriate, administer vaccinations to patients travelling abroad.
  • Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician.
  • Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings.
  • Implement and participate in routine immunisations and vaccinations, ensuring safe storage, rotation, stock take and disposal of vaccines.
  • Assist in emergency situations, should they occur at the Practice and ensure that emergency equipment is kept well stocked and maintained.
  • Follow agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate.
Person Specification Knowledge and Skills Essential
  • Competent in basic nursing duties required for the post
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of health and safety and infection control requirements
  • Competent IT skills
Desirable
  • Interest in or knowledge of diabetes management*
  • Experience of EMIS Web clinical system *
Qualifications Essential
  • Registered General Nurse
  • A demonstrable commitment to professional development
Desirable
  • Trained in diabetes care and management
  • Trained in phlebotomy and wound care
Experience Essential
  • Experience of working in accordance with the UKCC Code of Professional Conduct and the Scope of Professional Practice
  • Experience of dealing with the public/patients
  • Experience of assisting patients with long‑term conditions
  • Experience of using Microsoft Office software
  • Experience of Primary Care
Desirable
  • Local experience within the area
