This position works in the Roads and Drainage organizational unit. This is truck driving work in the operation of a dump truck of G.V.W. of 24,000 lbs. and over, used in a variety of sidewalk maintenance tasks. The work includes the safe and efficient operation of the truck, loading and dumping a variety of materials and transporting personnel, equipment and supplies.
The incumbent directs and participates in the work of one or more helpers engaged in semi-skilled sidewalk maintenance tasks and ensures the safety of work crews and the public by placing safety cones and/or flares as required. Completes basic daily productions reports for review by a superior to report on work performed. Washes and cleans truck, box and hydraulic dump, completes repair slips to request mechanical repairs and completes daily start-up routine such as checking oil, water and signals.
The work is distinguished from that of a Truck Driver 1 by the greater complexity and responsibility involved in operating a dump truck equipped with air brakes. Work performance is reviewed by a supervisor in terms of efficient and safe operation of the vehicle. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include the completion of up to high school graduation and considerable experience in the operation of a dump truck used in general construction and maintenance work. Thorough knowledge of rules of safe operation and precautions required in operating a dump truck. Sound knowledge of municipal streets and traffic routes; ability to operate a dump truck safely and efficiently and carry out oral and written instructions.
Considerable knowledge of truck driving techniques as applied to general construction and maintenance work and operating same in congested traffic conditions. Ability to complete Commercial Vehicle pre and post trip maintenance inspection reports on the equipment used; skill in the operation of a dump truck and equipment used in the work. A valid Class 5 Driver’s License with air brake endorsement for the Province of British Columbia is required.
