This position works in the Garage organizational unit. This is semi-skilled manual and equipment/truck operational work entailing a variety of garage support tasks. An incumbent of this class cleans the garage and related fleet services areas, fuels and cleans vehicles, provides manual assistance to the mechanics, welders and machinists in the performance of routine servicing of vehicles and equipment. In addition, an employee is required to pick up parts and drive vehicles and equipment to and from external service shops and suppliers and operates a forklift to perform loading, unloading and moving duties.
The work is performed under direct supervision of a supervisor and independence of judgment and action may be exercised for certain tasks. The work is subject to review for workmanship, adherence to established procedures, attainment of desired objectives and/or the safe and efficient operation of equipment and vehicles. Performs related work as required.
- Completion of Grade 12 plus considerable experience in operating trucks and equipment, janitorial work and basic use of hand tools and some experience in the related shop environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Considerable knowledge of the rules of safe operation and precautions required in driving and parking a variety of trucks, vehicles, heavy and light equipment.
- Sound knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in dispensing fuel and performing janitorial work as related to the work.
- Sound knowledge of methods, practices, tools and material used in a shop environment for the servicing and maintaining of equipment.
- Sound knowledge of municipal streets, traffic routes, hazards and safety precautions.
- A valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement and a Forklift Operator’s Certificate is required.
