Senior Aquatic Biologist

Location Nanaimo, Burnaby, Prince George or Smithers, BC

We have an immediate opening for a Senior Aquatic Biologist
, i.e., Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio), with 10 or more years of experience delivering biological services within British Columbia. Candidates with fewer years of experience are also encouraged to apply and may be considered for intermediate-level positions, depending on qualifications and expertise.

The successful candidate will possess a strong working knowledge of environmental legislation and regulatory processes in British Columbia, along with demonstrated experience applying these requirements across a diverse range of projects and industries. They will be comfortable providing technical leadership, regulatory guidance, and practical solutions to support project delivery while ensuring compliance with applicable standards and best practices.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity for a Senior Aquatic Biologist in our Nanaimo, Burnaby, Prince George, or Smithers office. Our ideal candidate has in-depth experience in aquatic biology in western Canada, with strengths in fisheries science, habitat offsetting, effects assessment and the regulatory environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Designing, planning and/or leading aquatic baseline field programs, aquatic habitat offsetting development, fish and fish habitat assessments and/or water quality field programs, and impact assessment
  • Managing projects throughout all phases
  • Providing technical guidance and direction to junior field staff through supervision, mentoring, and training
  • Preparing permit applications and developing technical reports, including environmental assessments and habitat offsetting plans
  • Analyzing and interpreting data and preparing technical reports, memos and other project deliverables
  • Assisting with the preparation of project budgets and proposals
  • Working effectively in a team environment to meet goals of the project productively and safely

We are looking for someone with:

  • A thorough knowledge of regulatory processes in British Columbia including the Water Sustainability Act and Fisheries Act with knowledge of local government permitting processes
  • A thorough understanding of biological survey techniques
  • Flexible and adaptable in identifying and mitigating environmental issues and risks during assessment and construction phases of projects
  • Demonstrated experience in fish habitat offsetting
  • A proven record in completing field work productively and safely
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and exceptional time management skills
  • The ability to work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment with limited supervision
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Experience with business development and writing proposals
  • Willingness to travel for field work in remote locations…
