The Burnaby Hospital redevelopment project is a multi‑phase project that will transform the hospital into a modernized medical and surgical health care campus. Phase one is slated to open in spring 2025 and phase two in 2030.

Overview

In accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and the Mission and Values of Fraser Health, the Registered Nurse (RN), O.R. provides direct nursing care to patients within the Operating Room (OR) according to established standards and administrative policies and procedures. Assesses patients physical and psycho‑social needs; identifies problems, plans, implements, documents, evaluates and coordinates the nursing care of assigned patients and performs scrubbing and circulating duties.

Responsibilities

Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care of patients. Identifies actual or potential problems, plans interventions, performs planned interventions and evaluates outcomes.

Receives and admits patients to the OR. Coordinates and provides nursing care to patients according to physician and anaesthetist orders and in conformance with established standards and hospital policies. Sets priorities, assigns and delegates tasks to appropriate staff.

Participates in identifying and reducing risk factors that may impact the patient and/or health care team. Acts as an advocate to protect and promote the patient’s right to autonomy, respect, privacy, dignity and access to information.

Modifies care as needs change. Initiates immediate treatment, such as applying non‑invasive monitoring devices if required.

Obtains, checks, sets up and positions supplies, instruments and equipment required for surgery ensuring that instruments and equipment are in working order. Reports instruments/equipment in need of repair.

Follows standardized count policy and provides appropriate documentation.

Performs scrub and circulation duties within the OR according to prescribed procedures and protocols.

Collects information from a variety of sources using skills of observation, communication and physical assessment to enable the provision of appropriate nursing care.

Participates in quality improvement activities and research by identifying patient care issues and collecting data.

Participates as an active member on nursing and hospital committees and councils for improvement of patient care and/or work environment.
