As a Post Anesthetic Care Nurse (PACU) recovery room nurse you will specialize in providing care for patients who are recovering from anesthesia after surgery or other medical procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses post-anaesthetic patients by collecting and evaluating information from a variety of sources using observation, communication, data review, and physical assessment; makes a nursing diagnosis and plans, performs, evaluates, and documents nursing interventions and care.
  • Provides nursing care to address critical care needs of patients according to physicians' and anaesthetists' orders, and in conformance with standards and hospital policies; initiates immediate treatment if required and modifies care as needed.
  • Communicates and shares information with the interprofessional care team; collaborates with Physicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, and other health care professionals to identify and resolve issues and adjust care plans as required.
  • Coordinates nursing care for the patient; sets priorities, assigns and delegates tasks to support staff, and makes referrals according to established protocols and practice standards.
  • Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment and is familiar with fire and other emergency procedures.
  • Establishes a therapeutic relationship, advocating for the patient s rights to privacy, dignity and informed decision making.
  • Documents assessments, nursing diagnoses, observations, interventions, patient/family responses, outcomes/evaluations, and referrals according to practice standards and Fraser Health procedures.
  • Participates in nursing committees, care conferences and councils as assigned; engages in research and quality improvement activities as appropriate.
  • Attends in-services and educational programs; maintains and updates clinical competence and knowledge within area of practice.
  • Acts as a preceptor or mentor to new nursing staff and students; participates in orientation.
  • Provides feedback to management regarding the effectiveness of patient care programs and equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Education and Experience
Graduation from an approved School of Nursing. Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). One (1) year s recent relevant clinical nursing experience in the designated clinical area and completion of post-graduate coursework and/or certification applicable to the area, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities
  • Clinical proficiency in the designated clinical area.
  • Proficiency in initiating and maintaining Intravenous Therapy.
  • Ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and apply nursing theory to provide care with appropriate safety interventions.
  • Ability to recognise acuity changes and respond to emergencies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians and other personnel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and the interprofessional care team using multiple communication methods.
  • Ability to promote person-centred care with empathy and respect for diverse cultures and patient advocacy.
  • Ability to integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to problem-solve.
  • Ability to teach and instruct patients and families about health topics.
  • Ability to organize and prioritise work; collaborate with the interprofessional care team.
  • Ability to use factual information and evidence-informed practice to support nursing decisions.
