Critical Care Program Streams
  • In‑house Critical Care program (CCP) – 12 weeks, full‑time. 2‑3 intakes per year.
  • BCIT Critical Care Program – 37 weeks (24 weeks online + 13 weeks full‑time). 4 intakes per year.

Royal Columbian Hospital is located adjacent to the Sapperton Sky Train station on the Expo Line. The ongoing redevelopment project will increase the hospital's capacity and services.

Detailed Overview

In accordance with BCCNM standards of practice and Fraser Health's mission, the Registered Nurse provides direct patient care by assessing, planning, providing, and evaluating nursing care to patients.

The purpose of this position is to provide qualified registered nurses the opportunity to consolidate their skills by rotating through a specialty nursing unit(s) prior to and/or during the undertaking of postgraduate specialty nursing courses applicable to the relevant unit(s). Successful applicants are expected to complete the applicable postgraduate specialty nursing courses/program within the agreed‑to time frames.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses patients and collects information from a variety of sources using skills of observation, communication, data review, and physical assessment. Makes a nursing diagnosis and determines appropriate interventions.
  • Collaborates with patients and their families to develop care plans and encourages family participation throughout.
  • Participates in the care and discharge planning process, ensuring the plan is established, implemented, and evaluated effectively, and collaborates with the interprofessional team.
  • Coordinates nursing care, sets priorities, assigns tasks to support staff, and makes referrals according to established protocols.
  • Collaborates with physicians, LPNS, patient care coordinators, clinical nurse educators, and other health professionals to resolve issues and adjust care plans.
  • Teaches patients and families about illness prevention, health restoration, and health maintenance.
  • Plans and discusses referral information with patient and families and initiates referrals to community agencies.
  • Documents assessments, diagnoses, interventions, outcomes, and referrals according to procedures.
  • Participates on nursing committees, care conferences, and councils as assigned.
  • Participates in research and quality improvement activities, identifying issues and recommending changes.
  • Attends in‑services and educational programs, maintains clinical competence, and updates knowledge.
  • Provides feedback to the manager regarding effectiveness of care programs and tools.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Education and Experience
  • Graduation from an approved School of Nursing and current RN registration with BCCNM.
  • Completion or willingness to complete applicable postgraduate specialty nursing course/program.
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
Skills and Abilities
  • Complete initial and ongoing patient assessment and provide nursing care through appropriate interventions.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, and the interprofessional team.
  • Promote person‑centered care and demonstrate empathy and advocacy.
  • Integrate and evaluate data from multiple sources to solve problems.
  • Teach patients and families about essential health topics.
  • Organize and prioritize work.
  • Collaborate with the interprofessional team to promote cooperation.
  • Use evidence‑informed practice to support nursing decisions.
  • Operate related equipment and computer applications.
