Service Manager - Fleet Maintenance Shop
The Service Manager is responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day shop operations and coordinating the activities of mechanics and apprentices in the maintenance and repair of motor coaches and fleet vehicles.
This role ensures that all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with federal and provincial regulations, including Transport Canada, Alberta Transportation, and ICBC standards.
Working under the direction of the Director, Maintenance, the Team Lead provides technical guidance, assigns tasks, monitors quality, and supports preventive and corrective maintenance programs. The role also contributes to inventory control, work order management, and ensures readiness for inspections and audits.
Key Responsibilities Supervision and Coordination- Supervise, schedule, and support mechanics and apprentices in performing inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and overhauls.
- Assign daily work orders and monitor progress to ensure timely completion.
- Provide technical assistance on complex repairs and troubleshooting.
- Ensure safe working conditions and adherence to OH&S protocols.
- Provide supervisory leadership to a diverse team of heavy‑duty mechanics, supporting both experienced technicians and apprentices in developing technical expertise and professional confidence.
- Conduct regular performance check‑ins and coaching sessions, offering constructive feedback, recognizing achievements, and identifying growth opportunities to build a high‑performing and engaged maintenance team.
- Promote a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture, encouraging knowledge‑sharing between senior staff and apprentices, and ensuring all team members feel supported in their career progression and contributions to fleet excellence.
- Ensure vehicles meet Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) standards through scheduled inspections, documentation, and compliance with provincial safety regulations.
- Oversee maintenance of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, HVAC systems, electrical systems, and suspension components.
- Ensure compliance with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) schedules and documentation.
- Conduct quality control checks and ensure repairs meet manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
- Ensure compliance with Transport Canada, NSC, CVSA, and provincial regulations.
- Maintain audit‑ready documentation and certification tracking.
- Conduct safety audits, risk assessments, and deliver safety training.
- Support readiness for CVIP, COR, and internal audits.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and parts usage.
- Conduct regular fleet and facility safety audits, risk assessments, and inspections to identify hazards, mitigate risks, and maintain a safe working environment for all team members.
- Stay current with evolving industry regulations and best practices.
- Requisition parts and supplies as needed.
- Monitor inventory levels and coordinate with procurement to avoid delays.
- Track usage and report discrepancies.
- Mentor junior mechanics and apprentices; support onboarding and skills development.
- Align work assignments with apprenticeship requirements.
- Promote continuous learning and adherence to safety procedures.
- Recommend training needs and assist in performance evaluations.
- Contribute to the team success and support Red Seal certification pathways by fostering a learning‑focused environment, coordinating training opportunities, and aligning work assignments with apprenticeship requirements and skill development goals.
- Respond to breakdowns and emergency repairs, including roadside service when required.
- Coordinate with dispatch and operations to minimize service disruptions.
- Normal mechanical and service bay work environment. Occasional work outdoors. PPE and physical demands include lifting, confined spaces, and safety gear required.
