Detailed Overview
As part of the interprofessional and team-based care model, the Child and Youth Clinical Counsellor will provide therapeutic counselling services for children, youth, and young adults (up to 24 years old) and families experiencing mild to moderate mental health and substance use challenges. This role includes outreach work with local resources such as community hubs, centres, libraries, recreational centres, school district counsellors, and other youth-friendly services.

This role collaborates with community and governmental organizations to support children in care and youth services.

Responsibilities

  • Provides short-term brief intervention and support to younger clients affected by mental illness and/or substance use, including children, youth, and young adults (up to age 24) in crisis, utilizing crisis intervention and short-term cognitive behavioural therapy and other modalities; follow-up, monitoring, and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Assesses client needs and available services; contributes to shared care plans with client input; facilitates access to community services and rehabilitative programs.
  • Screens referrals from the interprofessional team, gathers background information, determines priorities, and provides timely responses through outreach/in-reach crisis intervention and referrals.
  • Collaborates with PCN interprofessional team, family physicians, health care professionals, and community partners; assists with system navigation for clients and families.
  • Delivers workshops and psycho-education sessions to clients, families, and community agencies as determined by management.
  • Identifies gaps in service and recommends solutions for coordinated community response for child, youth, and young adults (up to age 24) mental health.
  • Maintains written reports and clinical documentation according to policies and procedures; manages client feedback and treatment plans.
  • Makes referrals to community-based and specialized services (e.g., Early Psychosis Intervention, START, Foundry, Family Support Service) for continuity of care.
  • Fosters a collaborative team environment through peer supervision and case consultations with the management teams.
  • Assists in program evaluation and quality improvement activities; adheres to standards of practice, policies, and procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education, Training & Experience
Master's in Counselling Psychology, Social Work, or other related discipline from an accredited institution, plus two (2) years of recent related experience with families, children, and youth in a clinical counselling setting; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Eligible for registration with a relevant professional association.

Skills & Abilities

  • Comprehensive clinical counselling and therapy skills including crisis counselling.
