Position: Sessional Instructor - Basic Security Training
Location: New Westminster

Position Summary

In support of Security Training, the Justice and Public Safety Division at the Justice Institute of British Columbia invites applications for a sessional faculty position to instruct SCRT‑1651 Basic Security Training. This 40‑hour course is a required part of the provincial licensing process for security guards in British Columbia under the Security Services Act. Instructors are responsible for delivering course content in line with the approved course outline and learning outcomes, using clear, engaging, and practical teaching methods.

Instruction includes facilitated discussion, hands‑on activities, and scenario‑based learning that help students connect theory to real‑world practice. Instructors create a respectful, inclusive, and face‑to‑face learning environment that supports student success and belonging. The role includes answering learner questions about course content and assignments within 48 hours, with a goal of responding within 12‑24 hours when possible. Instructors support learning by encouraging discussion, critical thinking, reflection, and strong links between classroom learning and job expectations.

Clear, timely, and helpful feedback must be provided to support learner growth. All teaching duties must follow JIBC policies, procedures, and guidelines, as outlined in the Teaching Faculty Handbook, and reflect JIBC’s commitment to quality education, fairness, and inclusive learning environments.

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Current BST Security License is required
  • BC Instructors certificate or equivalent preferred
  • Two or more years of experience working as a security guard or related field
  • Minimum of two years documented teaching experience. Preference for those with experience in a post‑secondary classroom setting in a classroom setting
  • Experience working in the security industry and/or a combination of security industry and justice & public safety related field is preferred
  • Effective English language, oral and written communication
  • Knowledge and experience with all MS Office and various meeting platforms
  • Ability to maintain collegial working relationships with students, staff, administration, and other instructors
  • Sound judgment and sensitivity when handling complex issues along with excellent organizational and problem‑solving skills with a proven ability to work under pressure
  • Lead, inspire and shape students’ behaviours and actions through a commitment of excellence, passion and enthusiasm for the work, applying relevant program and institutional policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Willingness and ability to travel as needed
  • Willingness to complete JIBC Instructional Skills training
