The Centre for Accessible Learning's mandate is to support SFU students with disabilities in their pursuit of academic opportunity by mitigating barriers to access in all facets of University life. The Disability Services Officer team has key student-facing and instructor-facing responsibilities to ensure that students with disabilities receive the classroom and exam accommodations to which they are legally entitled. The CAL team values trust, open communication, creative problem-solving, and shares a commitment to improving the student experience.
About the RoleThe Disability Services Officer (DSO) helps identify appropriate specialized services and supports for students with disabilities and is responsible for arranging and ensuring that such services and accommodations are effectively implemented, thereby fulfilling the institution's legal obligation to provide services, programs and facilities free from discrimination for all students and members of the community not covered by other offices or policy.
This position serves as the unit expert on assistive technologies and support and is tasked with identifying best practices. The DSO oversees the complex examination processes, liaises with learning and medical professionals to tailor authorized academic services and accommodations, works with other SFU departments to arrange for specialized academic and resource assistance, consults with faculty, government officials, departments, and schools regarding services, accommodations, and program development, oversees the work of temporary staff and student aides, and represents the SFU Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL), where appropriate, in the local community.
The ideal candidate is highly organized and able to multi-task in a fast‑paced, high‑output environment where protocols, policy interpretation, and risk mitigation are of paramount importance. This individual is poised under pressure and able to shift operational focus quickly. They demonstrate skills working with vulnerable individuals from marginalized populations using a trauma‑informed approach. They are a clear and kind communicator who is equally comfortable working independently and contributing their ideas, talents and energy to meeting team objectives.
Qualifications- Excellent knowledge and sensitivity of a wide range of disabilities, related issues, and related adaptive technologies.
- Excellent knowledge of specialized software and specialized databases.
- Excellent knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, and web management applications.
- Excellent team leadership, organizational, problem‑solving, and analytical/reasoning skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills using diplomacy and discretion.
