Hazardous Materials Specialist Posting Summary
Ensure safety of UVM community through proper management of facilities-related hazardous materials including asbestos, lead, and mold. Coordinate with campus partners to ensure safety of work crews, building occupants, and campus community through planning, design, monitoring of containment and work practices, and end of project clearance. Identify, assess, monitor, and remediate hazards in accordance with state and federal regulations. Manage on-site contractors for remediation of hazards on campus.
Delegate work assignments, monitor/review quality of work, schedule staff and contractors, and provide technical assistance and/or training. Work requires the ability to analyze and troubleshoot problems. This position is essential to assist with regulatory compliance and positive public relations. This position reports to the Facilities Trades Supervisor (Hazardous Materials Supervisor) and requires active engagement in learning and practicing principles of social justice and inclusion, environmental sustainability and delivering great customer experience.
- High school diploma and a minimum of five years of experience that provides necessary skills, knowledge, abilities, and familiarity with (V)
OSHA, EPA/VT DEC, and Department of Health regulations. - Have, or have the ability to obtain, the following licenses within 6 months of hire:
Asbestos Site Inspector, Asbestos Management Planner, Asbestos Project Monitor, Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor, Lead Renovation, Repair, Painting, and Maintenance. - Lifting of up to 50 lbs. occasionally required.
- Smokers will not be considered due to research that indicates a high medical risk when working with asbestos.
- Valid Vermont driver's license or the ability to obtain a valid Vermont driver's license.
- Operate a university vehicle including the box truck.
- Ability to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to workplace diversity, sustainability and delivering exceptional value and great experience to customers.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Subject to acceptable background check.
- Effective communication skills.
- Basic computer skills, including the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
- Ability to work occasional overtime
- 40-hour Asbestos Supervisor License
- Certification in safety or environmental field
- OSHA 10/30-hour certification
- Read and understand building diagrams and have a basic understanding of building trades
- Experience in a higher education workplace
- Bargaining Unit Position - United Electrical Workers
- Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime)
- External candidates must complete a 4-month probationary period
- A probationary period may be required for current UVM employees
