About UsThe Solid Waste Division provides weekly curbside collection of household garbage, yard waste collection, and bulk waste collection.
What You Will Be DoingPerforms routine manual work in the collection of garbage, trash, and yard waste in the Solid waste Division of the Public Works department. This position offers opportunities for advancement and promotion within the organization, along with the ability to obtain your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) as part of your professional development.
Expected Hiring Range$37,315.. Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A starting salary above the range listed may be considered for highly qualified individuals not to exceed the maximum of the grade.
- Trash & Waste Collection Team Member:
Contributes to a dedicated crew responsible for collecting trash, yard waste, and large items like furniture and appliances from roadways, ensuring a clean and well‑maintained environment. - Site Cleanup:
Efficiently cleans areas around trash cans and picks up scattered debris, contributing to the overall cleanliness of public spaces. - Landfill Assistance:
Supports the disposal process by helping to unload solid waste at the landfill, ensuring proper waste management. - Equipment Maintenance:
Assists in the cleaning and upkeep of collection trucks and tools, ensuring all equipment is ready for efficient operation. - Safety‑Conscious Work Ethic:
Works diligently to maintain a safe environment for both self and team members, prioritizing safety in every task. - Non‑CDL Vehicle Operation:
Operates light‑duty vehicles (under 26,000 pounds) such as pickup trucks when required, assisting in waste collection and transportation. - Tech‑Savvy Waste Management:
Uses a Novo Gov mobile device to log pickup locations and report areas that need attention, helping optimize collection routes and identify challenges. - Additional Duties:
Performs related tasks as needed, always ready to contribute wherever the team requires support.
- Awareness of Occupational Hazards:
Understands the potential risks associated with working in traffic environments and handling garbage and refuse, always prioritizing safety while on the job. - Physical Stamina:
Capable of performing strenuous manual labor consistently, maintaining a steady work pace during extended hours, even in challenging weather conditions. - Weather‑Resilient:
Demonstrates the ability to adapt to varying environmental conditions, ensuring work is completed efficiently and safely regardless of weather challenges. - Safety‑Focused:
Continuously adheres to safety guidelines, using appropriate protective measures while working in traffic and handling potentially hazardous materials.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency is preferred and 6 months of work experience in general maintenance and working outdoors.
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, feeling and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and pick up 50 pounds of weight without assistance.
- Must possess visual acuity to operate a solid waste vehicle collecting garbage and refuse.
