General Statement of Duties
Performs routine semi-skilled and skilled labor maintaining parks and facilities within the Recreation and Parks Department.
Distinguishing Features of the ClassAn employee in this class performs manual labor involving a variety of buildings and grounds maintenance tasks. They will also assist with inspecting and maintaining the park playgrounds, amusement rides, and the aquatic filtration and pump systems at the pools and splash park throughout the city. Employee will use a variety of tools, landscape equipment and other small equipment. The employee is subject to working in both inside and outside environments and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, and chemicals.
Work is performed under regular supervision of the Park Maintenance Crew Leader and is evaluated through observation and inspection to determine the thoroughness in carrying out assigned duties. This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Performs a variety of task in the landscaping, maintenance, and repair of City parks and facilities
Operates hand and power tools, lawn equipment, tractors, City vehicles, and other tools and equipment as required
Assist with the inspection and maintenance of the amusement park rides to ensure the safe operation and that they are in compliance with the NCDOL codes and regulations
Assist with the maintenance and repair of the city playgrounds to ensure the meet all ASTM and CPSC guidelines for a safe play environment for the kids
Assist with the maintenance and repair of the aquatic filtration and pump systems for the city pools and splash park
Assist (when needed) the custodial crew to ensure all the Recreation facilities are cleaned and supplied daily
Completes task and work orders assigned by supervisor
Assembles and disassembles tables, chairs, and other event equipment for special events at various City parks and facilities
Cleans and pick-up trash in parks
Works during inclement weather performing storm clean up, snow and ice removal, or other debris removal as needed.
Performs some night and weekend work
Assigned to an on-call rotating weekly schedule
Performs related tasks as required
General knowledge of building construction, and maintenance
General knowledge of standards, practices, materials, tools, and equipment utilized in the maintenance of buildings and landscaping
General knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work
General knowledge of basic electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and custodial practices
General knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work
Ability to work productively without close supervision and respond courteously to citizens.
Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with other City employees and the general public
High School Diploma or GED equivalency and some work experience in construction, building maintenance, repair of park grounds and facilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special RequirementsValid North Carolina Driver’s License
Physical Requirements and Working ConditionsWork in this class is described as strenuous using a negligible amount of force occasionally to move objects and complete tasks. An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Work necessitates visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work assigned.
An employee must possess the visual acuity to operate light equipment such as the mowers and vacuum cleaners, and small trucks in a safe manner. The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
