Position: Behavioral Health Tech / Day Shift / Facility Based Crisis

Overview

Behavioral Health Tech / Day Shift / Facility Based Crisis. The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides direct support, supervision, and therapeutic assistance to individuals receiving behavioral health services in facility-based, crisis, or residential treatment settings. The BHT plays a critical role in maintaining safety, supporting stabilization, monitoring behaviors, implementing treatment interventions, and promoting the emotional and physical well-being of each individual served.

This position supports a trauma-informed, person-centered environment and ensures that care is delivered with dignity, respect, and cultural humility.

Responsibilities
  • Direct Support and Patient Care:
    Provide direct patient care to individuals with psychiatric or co-occurring disorders, ensuring safety and well-being at all times.
  • Follow the plan of care, including observation levels, safety checks, and supervision.
  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as hygiene, meals, mobility, and personal care, while promoting autonomy.
  • Monitor and document behavior, mood, affect, sleep, intake/output, and participation in programming.
  • Support individuals experiencing crisis using de-escalation, grounding, redirection, and therapeutic engagement techniques.
  • Respond appropriately to behavioral or medical emergencies and all facility codes.
Therapeutic Environment and Program Support
  • Help maintain a structured, safe, and therapeutic environment within the unit or crisis setting.
  • Lead or co-facilitate skills groups, recreational activities, psycho educational sessions, and coping-skills practice as assigned.
  • Encourage patient participation in therapeutic activities and support treatment goals.
  • Monitor and support individuals during transitions, meals, quiet room time, visitation, and safe transport.
Safety, Crisis Prevention, and Intervention
  • Identify triggers, early warning signs, and changes in behavior; report concerns to clinical and nursing staff promptly.
  • Utilize trauma-informed, least-restrictive intervention strategies to prevent escalation.
  • Implement protocols for special precautions, suicide prevention, elopement risk, violence precautions, and environmental safety rounds.
  • Demonstrate appropriate techniques for managing aggressive or unsafe behavior.
Documentation and Communication
  • Accurately document observations, interventions, incidents, and care in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Communicate effectively with the interdisciplinary team regarding patient needs, risk factors, and progress.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary treatment team meetings, shift reports, and clinical hand-offs.
Teamwork, Professionalism, and Quality
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and adhere to organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
  • Demonstrate infection control practices and contribute to a clean, safe environment.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and model respectful, trauma-informed interactions.
  • Support new team members during onboarding by demonstrating proper unit routines and protocols.
Other Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the health, safety, and well-being of the individuals served.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience in behavioral health, inpatient psychiatric care, crisis units, emergency departments, or residential treatment programs is preferred, not required.
  • Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and reliable transportation.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Regularly required to lift 20 lbs; must be able to lift a minimum of 30 lbs and pull a minimum of 20 lbs.
  • Must be able to squat, kneel, crawl, crouch, climb, and stoop.
  • Must be able to regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Required to regularly stand and walk.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in CPR in conditions requiring hands, knees, bending, standing, and lifting.
