Overview

Do you take pride in ensuring the quality of the City’s drinking water? Great! The City of Burlington is looking for a Part Time Assistant Water Quality Specialist.

Who We Are: The City of Burlington laboratory monitors the water and wastewater to ensure that they are in compliance with all state and federal regulations. Laboratory personnel also assist in troubleshooting residential and industrial complaints.

What You Will Do

Performs responsible technical work to enhance, protect, and maintain the City’s drinking water quality in the water distribution system.

Water Distribution System Flushing
  • Conducts flushing of the water distribution system, adhering to local, state, and federal guidelines as well as best management practices to ensure water quality maintenance.
  • Utilizes valves, hydrants, and blow-offs to apply effective flushing techniques for water quality restoration.
Flushing Plan Development
  • Reviews and interprets digital and paper maps to devise strategic flushing plans that ensure optimal water system performance and quality.
Dead-End Flushing Site Management
  • Assists with dead-end flushing site sampling, ensuring accurate recording of results for monitoring and compliance purposes.
Water Sample Collection
  • Assists with collecting potable, wastewater, and reclaimed water samples from various treatment plants, distribution systems, and receiving waters.
  • Delivers water samples to the laboratory, ensuring the correct documentation and adherence to sampling schedules.
Citizen Complaint Resolution
  • Assists in responding to citizen complaints regarding water quality, including conducting sample collection and hydrant flushing, and providing solutions to common issues.
Water Quality Data Management
  • Collects, maintains, and evaluates technical water quality data.
Compliance with Sampling Protocols
  • Follows established sampling procedures set by the Water Resources Department, ensuring all regulatory and safety protocols are meticulously observed.
Safety and Compliance
  • Ensures the adherence to safety protocols during all sampling and flushing activities, complying with state certification requirements and federal guidelines.
Other Duties
  • Performs related duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of the water quality and distribution system operations.
Entry-Level Responsibilities (supporting roles)
  • Water Distribution System Flushing:
    Entry-level experience assisting with water distribution system flushing under supervision, following local, state, and federal guidelines and best management practices to support water quality maintenance.
  • Flushing Plan Development:
    Basic knowledge of reviewing and using digital and paper system maps to assist in developing and implementing flushing plans.
  • Dead-End Flushing Site Management:
    Experience supporting dead-end flushing site sampling, including accurate data recording for monitoring and compliance purposes.
  • Water Sample Collection:
    Trained in collecting potable, wastewater, and reclaimed water samples from treatment plants, distribution systems, and receiving waters.
  • Citizen Complaint Resolution:
    Experience assisting senior staff in responding to citizen water quality concerns, including sample collection, hydrant flushing, and communication of basic information.
  • Water Quality Data Management:
    Capable of collecting and maintaining water quality field data, including recording flushing locations, infrastructure used, flow rates, and water loss under guidance.
  • Compliance With Sampling Protocols:
    Knowledge of established sampling procedures set by the Water Resources Department and ability to follow regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Safety And Compliance:
    Committed to following safety procedures, state certification requirements, and federal guidelines during all sampling and flushing activities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
