Job Summary

Functions in a project engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, supports engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables. Applies foundational engineering principles and established design practices to create moderately complex design concepts and solutions. Utilizes digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables. Provides technical guidance and may offer direction to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes and Black & Veatch policies and procedures.
  • Review project requirements and accurately determine correct format and contents of deliverables.
  • Proactively apply Black & Veatch Quality Program to deliverables; demonstrate personal accuracy and support continuous improvement.
  • Review design inputs to ensure consistency; ensure deliverables comply with specific codes and standards.
  • Apply basic engineering principles and design practices in developing moderately complex design concepts and deliverables.
  • Make decisions regarding deliverables and input interpretation.
  • Handle difficult technical assignments within expertise; provide technical guidance to others.
  • Perform design calculations, detailed material quantities and estimates, and record-keeping.
  • Review deliverables of others; define work assignments and maintain schedules.
  • Program control systems or participate in plant startup activities associated with a specialized area of expertise.
  • Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information.
  • Support field activities where appropriate.
  • Focus on internal clients’ needs while understanding external clients’ main interests and drivers.
  • Seek and share knowledge of latest technologies and processes; apply judgment to deliverables.
  • Assist in performance management, mentoring, and recognition; provide guidance to lesser experienced Engineering technicians.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Diploma or certificate preferred.
  • Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design related technology preferred.
  • 3–8 years of related work experience (minimum 5 years for consideration).
  • PLS-CADD experience; utility‑scale project experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk AutoCAD, Bentley Micro Station 2D/3D or PLS‑CADD.
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, Black & Veatch policies and procedures.
  • Intermediate industry knowledge and technology trends; knowledge of company quality program.
  • Advanced ability to interpret engineering deliverable content; intermediate knowledge of other disciplines.
  • Basic knowledge of construction and constructability, procurement and contract administration, engineering design principles and applicable design guides.
  • Strong non‑technical skills: learning on the fly, problem solving, perseverance, patience, time management, drive for results, self‑development, listening, informing.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 5 years related work experience.
Certification

None stated; however relevant professional certifications (e.g., AIA, ASCE) are advantageous.
