Job Description

Job Goal: The special education teacher coordinates and provides programming for children with disabilities, instruction in academic, social language, motor, self‑regulation, leisure, and life skills.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assess capabilities and skills of assigned students and seek means to assist each in learning.
  • Design and implement programs using pull‑out/inclusion for students eligible for Special Education services, covering academic, social/emotional, behavioral, and activities of daily living.
  • Collect data and use it to create specially designed plans and guide instruction.
  • Conduct evaluations under Special Education Laws: review educationally relevant information, administer assessment battery, prepare written reports, summarize findings, and recommend strategies at TEAM meetings; attend TEAM meetings.
  • Complete paperwork: development of IEPs, timelines, progress reports.
  • Advise and assist teachers with diagnostic and remedial measures; implement modifications of curriculum materials.
  • Oversee instructional assistants: schedule, train, collaborate on activities and lessons.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, social workers, team chairpersons, school psychologists, specialists, other service providers, and outside agencies.
  • Prepare and maintain records to facilitate information flow among staff.
  • Communicate/consult with parents: keep them informed of progress, involve them in IEP goal attainment.
  • Develop personal professional development plan with Building Principal and Director of Special Education.
  • Attend all professional meetings scheduled by Superintendent, Director of Special Education, or Building Principal.
  • Ensure compliance with Massachusetts Special Education Regulations.
  • Perform other duties as requested by Director of Special Education and/or building team chair.
Requirements
  • Master’s degree in special education preferred.
  • DESE certification in moderate special needs required.
  • OG certification preferred.
  • Good organizational and communication skills; experience delivering co‑teaching, 1:1, and small group instruction.
  • Minimum 3 years experience working with children diagnosed with disabilities and leadership experience/skills.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
Compensation

$125 per day until the teacher comes off the salary schedule, then in accordance with the Burlington Educators' Association Unit A contract.

Start Date

April 23 – May 18, 2026.
