Position: ELECTRICIAN APPRENTICE

OPEN COMPETITIVE RECRUITMENT

Tentative examination dates for this recruitment:

  • Week of 03/23/2026 - Written examination
  • Week of 05/04/2026 - Performance examination

Under direct supervision of an Electrician, Senior Electrician, or an Electrical Supervisor, to perform work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical facilities in electric and water utility systems, while fulfilling the training and educational requirements of the Electrician Apprenticeship Program of the City of Burbank; and perform related work as required.

  • Assists journey-level Electricians with electrical and mechanical work in the construction, installation, maintenance, and testing of equipment in electrical generating plants, water utility facilities, communications systems, municipal buildings, electric switching and distributing stations, and substations;
  • Fabricates, forms, and erects bus and steel structures;
  • Installs conduits for electrical facilities;
  • Moves and installs all sizes of electrical equipment and associated control equipment;
  • Installs, splices, and terminates wires, cables, and fiber optic cables;
  • Works on energized high voltage circuits and equipment;
  • Tests, repairs, and maintains safety protective devices, electric motors, generators, communication equipment, and other electrical and electronic devices;
  • Tests, filters, and treats insulating oils and SF6 gas;
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and overhauls air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration equipment;
  • Installs and maintains street light systems;
  • Keeps supplies and tools in proper order;
  • Operates power driven equipment such as trucks, compressors, aerial lifts, and skip loaders;
  • Learns and follows proper safety and working procedures;
  • Operates a computer with related software;
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports, both manually and electronically;
  • Completes after-hour classes and receives on-the-job instruction and training to become progressively more skilled and able to work more independently;
  • May be required to perform duties in the handling, cleanup, and disposal of hazardous materials;
  • Drives on City business.
Employment Standards
  • Knowledge: Basic principles of electricity; common tools used in electrical and mechanical work; spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Skill: Operating common tools used in electrical and mechanical work; operating modern computers and related software.
  • Ability: Follow oral and written directions; learn and employ safety policies and working procedures; learn electrical work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical facilities in electric and water utility systems; work at heights greater than 30 feet; maintain records and reports; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public.
Education/Training

Graduation from high school or equivalent at time of appointment.

Special Conditions & Requirements
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment;
  • Employees in this classification, who are required by applicable laws and regulations to have respiratory protection, shall comply with the American National Standards Institute’s requirements on Practices for Respiratory Protection;
  • Safety weight limitations mandated by vehicle and/or equipment manufacturers shall restrict the total body weight of any individual in this classification.
  • COLOR VISION:
    Keen color perception.
License & Certificates
  • Valid California Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent at time of appointment; and a valid California Class “A” Driver’s License within 18 months of appointment.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Crane certification.
