The Palliative Care Registered Nurse is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation, and for promoting the Compassus philosophy using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. S/he upholds the Code of Ethical Conduct and promotes positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and with external stakeholders. Under the supervision of the Director of Clinical Services, the RN provides services to palliative care patients and their families following nursing processes and the Nurse Practice Act.
The RN participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team, providing clinical support, communication, and coordination of care across settings. The RN functions as an IDT member to provide telephonic and telehealth routine and emergency assessment, educational, and evaluative services to meet the needs of patients and their families. S/he assists the IDT in the assessment and management of prognosis and symptom burden, and helps maintain maximum comfort and coping.
The RN will also participate in evaluating palliative care patients for transition to hospice programs.

The employee must be competent in interpreting a patient’s self-report or behavior, considering cognitive, physical, emotional/psychosocial, and developmental factors. Treatment should be individualized to reflect the patient’s specific needs.
ResponsibilitiesPosition Specific Responsibilities
- Utilizes the nursing process to assess patient status, collaborate with attending staff to intervene appropriately, and evaluate patient response.
- Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team addressing patient and family needs.
- Observes, evaluates, and contributes information regarding psychosocial, spiritual, physical, and financial conditions affecting the patient and family.
- Serves as an advocate for the patient/family unit.
- Develops and maintains contact with appropriate community agencies and services to promote inter-agency cooperation and facilitate referrals.
- Facilitates and supports decision-making around end-of-life planning, including discussions about treatment options, advance directives, and communication of wishes with family and friends.
- Maintains patient records in accordance with state, federal, and organizational requirements.
- Engages in professional development related to position responsibilities.
- Participates in palliative care committees and task forces.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required: Associate’s Degree in Nursing
Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
California: Required – 2 years RN experience
Skills and CertificationsCertifications, Licenses, and Registrations
California Registered Nurse License (Required upon hire)
National Provider BLS - American Heart Association (Required within 30 days of hire)
HPNA Certification (preferred; eligibility required)
Skills
- Language skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business materials; strong written and verbal communications. - Other skills and abilities:
English literacy; ability to develop positive working relationships; effective time management; problem solving; travel readiness. - Computer skills:
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; ability to learn software used in Home Services.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

Compensation and BenefitsCompensation range
: $50.18 - $77.91 per hour
The listed amounts are base pay; additional compensation may include shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
