POSITION SUMMARYThis position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). The role is responsible for the collection and receipt of biological specimens into the department, proper entry into the company’s computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and distribution of specimens to the proper analytical area. Responsibilities include pre‑ and post‑analytical processes, performing specified analytical testing as assigned, and following the Code of Conduct guidelines.
All functions are performed according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and applicable professional standards.
1. Perform specimen collection, general laboratory specimen processing, or referral laboratory processing while ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity. In IOP locations, manage client relationships within compliance regulations to meet business objectives.
2. Enter and verify patient demographics, location, physician data, requested tests, collection time and date, and clinical information from requisitions and computer‐generated orders. Verify accuracy and appropriateness of specimens, aliquot and label specimens per departmental procedures, deliver to the technical area timely, or perform initial processing and preparation for transport. Assist in monitoring workflow and training new employees.
3. Focus on quality by ensuring accuracy and completeness of all work, completing documents legibly, following established methods, and maintaining familiarity with procedures. Use documentation to record communications, initiate computer‑generated reports for patient reporting and QA monitoring, and meet departmental standards for productivity and quality. Participate in committees or Six Sigma teams and maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates.
4. Participate in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials, avoid excessive waste, and engage in initiatives to reduce costs and improve service. Basic knowledge of billing is required.
5. Communicate courteously and professionally with internal and external customers, interact with co‑workers with an emphasis on teamwork and customer service, work all areas/ departments/ shifts as assigned, resolve basic service issues, and attend meetings while staying current with internal/external communications.
6. Acknowledge and understand the importance of ‘Patient Rights’ and privacy (HIPAA).

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITYPrimarily departmental responsibility; involved in interdepartmental communication and activities. Internal customers are employees of the system. External customers include nurses, physicians, office personnel, and vendors.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENT FACTORSMust stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently; lift, push, and/or pull up to 25 pounds; use manual dexterity and standard precautions due to exposure to blood and body fluids, chemicals, electrical and biological hazards. Requires computer, printer, copier, telephone, fax, and department‑specific equipment. Ability to distinguish colors and assimilate instructions quickly.

- Completion of a phlebotomy program or phlebotomy experience.
- May require DHS fingerprinting certification or ability to obtain it.
- Valid state driver’s license (state of employment) and eligible for company auto insurance coverage.
- Float positions require travel, flexible hours, multiple locations, and coverage of mobile phlebotomy or in‑office locations with minimal notice. Flexibility for weekends, holidays, overtime, and on‑call duties is required.
- Progression through career ladder II‑IV subject to completion of ladder requirements.
