Overview

Mohave County Public Health-Environmental Health Division is looking to fill an Environmental Health Specialist II position.

Location:

1130 Hancock Road, Bullhead City, AZ.

About us

The Environmental Health Division conducts inspections to ensure establishments adhere to environmental health rules and regulations set by the State of Arizona. The Environmental Health Specialist will evaluate for compliance or violations in motels, trailer parks, swimming pools, food retail stores, food service establishments, and kennels. Salary range
  • Environmental Health Technician: $20.09 – $33.21/hr (Salary Range 12, Steps 1-18)
  • Environmental Health Specialist I: $23.26 – $38.47/hr (Salary Range 15, Steps 1-18)
  • Environmental Health Specialist II: $25.65 – $42.41/hr (Salary Range 17, Steps 1-18)
Typical schedule and work environment
  • Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm
  • Work will be both office and field environments
  • Occasional early morning or evening work
  • Rotating weekends and call-backs for inspections of temporary events; rare holidays
  • Interact with the public, business owners, and other departments and agencies
  • Possible outdoor outreach and community education sessions
  • This division serves as a regulatory authority; ability to read and interpret a variety of codes and regulations and apply them professionally
Travel and work conditions
  • Travel throughout Mohave County; may travel to other parts of the state as needed
  • Operate a Mohave County vehicle; room costs and per diem covered for required overnight stays
  • Indoor facilities with confined spaces, noise, and odors; varying weather conditions outdoors
  • Occasional moderate lifting (25–50 lbs); standing, walking, running, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and bending
Responsibilities
  • Inspect, evaluate, and render decisions of compliance or violation for licensed and public establishments (motels, trailer parks, public bathing facilities, swimming pools, food establishments, pet stores) under Arizona rules
  • Review construction plans for compliance with environmental health rules
  • Conduct field and office training to educate owners and managers on practices and procedures
  • Investigate citizen complaints and coordinate inspection activities with other County departments and agencies
  • Collect field samples, conduct environmental health surveys, and analyze information to submit recommendations
  • Prepare reports, maintain records, and issue notices of violation or closures
  • Develop and deliver educational presentations on environmental health topics as needed
  • Maintain professional communication with the public, co-workers, and work contacts
Qualifications
  • Educational background:
    High School Diploma/GED; college-level science courses (Biology, Chemistry) preferred
  • Experience or training options for Environmental Health Technician/Sanitarian Aide paths as described below
  • Willingness to pursue registration as a Sanitarian with the State of Arizona for advancement to Environmental Health Specialist

Preferred education, experience and training
  • Bachelor of Science in Basic Sciences (Biology, Chemistry) or related field
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental health codes and regulations
  • Experience in inspections, education, compliance, and enforcement
  • Strong communication, reporting, and data analysis skills
  • Computer proficiency (Windows, Word, Excel, email) and ability to maintain records
