Manufacturing (Design) Engineer - Automotive Product Development

Base Salary $100-140k + Annual Bonus

Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Manufacturing Engineer who will take complete ownership of automotive components from initial concept through end-of-life. This role requires a unique blend of theoretical engineering knowledge and practical manufacturing expertise to rapidly prototype, design, source, and implement vehicle parts, tooling, and templates.
Key Responsibilities
Product Development & Lifecycle Management
  • Own products through their entire lifecycle, from initial design concept through production ramp-up, manufacturing, and implementation.
  • Rapidly prototype new components and assemblies to validate designs and manufacturing approaches
  • Design parts, tooling, fixtures, and templates that are optimized for manufacturability, quality, and cost
  • Source materials, components, and manufacturing services from qualified suppliers
  • Implement new products into production, including process development, equipment qualification, and operator training
Engineering & Problem Solving
  • Apply first principles engineering thinking to solve complex manufacturing challenges
  • Analyze and optimize manufacturing processes for efficiency, quality, and safety
  • Develop innovative solutions for tooling, fixturing, and assembly methods
  • Create and maintain technical documentation including specifications, work instructions, and engineering drawings
Hands-On Manufacturing
  • Utilize basic hand tools, additive solutions, and design tools to build prototypes, troubleshoot issues, and validate processes
  • Understand equipment operation, maintenance requirements, and manufacturing capabilities
  • Work directly on the production floor to implement changes and support manufacturing operations
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for quality or production issues
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner closely with Quality Engineering to establish inspection criteria, resolve non-conformances, and drive continuous improvement
  • Work with Operations teams to optimize production flow, reduce downtime, and improve throughput
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and equipment used in automotive production
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering fundamentals and first principles thinking to solve problems
  • Proficiency with basic hand tools and mechanical aptitude for understanding how things are made
  • Experience with rapid prototyping techniques and iterative design processes
  • Knowledge of tooling design, fixture development, and template creation
  • Ability to read and create engineering drawings and technical specifications
  • Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in automotive manufacturing or related production environment
  • Competent with CAD software, Solid Works preferred.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies
  • Understanding of quality systems (ISO/TS 16949, APQP, PPAP)
  • Experience with supplier development and qualification
  • Hands-on experience with machining, welding, or fabrication processes is added value
