Overview
Incumbents in this position perform routine observation and enforcement work of the parking ordinances of the City of Buffalo and State of New York. This position is characterized by a broad responsibility for the issuance of parking summonses for violations on city streets, public/private property on a daily basis. Incumbents may be required to work any of the three shifts including weekends performing duties.
They are guided by policy, procedures and specific guidelines in terms of services to be provided. Incumbents receive general directions and supervision from superiors.
- Issues summonses for parking violations to conform with established departmental procedures on a daily basis: accurately completes related forms daily; enters information regarding parking violations on a hand-held computer and printer; applies vehicle immobilizer (boot) when necessary.
- Patrols city highways and districts on foot or in city-owned vehicles: maintains fluid levels, tire inflation and cleanliness of city-owned vehicles.
- Receives radio dispatched parking complaints and general directions in accordance with accepted radio communication practices.
- Assists in special towing and mini-towing operations such as removal of abandoned and scofflawed vehicles and emergency operations: verifies vehicles and processes towing orders for vehicles that should be towed; may be required to work during emergencies, special events and/or snow removal.
- Wears and maintains designated uniform and related equipment.
- May make deliveries of varied materials as necessary.
- Assists other city agencies in various operations.
- May be required to work shift work including weekends.
- Performs related duties as required.
Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma.
Special RequirementsPossession of a current New York State Driver's License that must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment.

- Working knowledge of the geography of the City of Buffalo;
- Ability to understand and interpret written material, i.e. laws and ordinances pertaining to parking enforcement;
- Ability to deal effectively with a variety of situations arising from performing the duties of a Parking Enforcement Officer;
- Ability to be trained in the operation of a hand-held computer and printer;
- Ability to be responsible for care and maintenance of equipment used by a Parking Enforcement Officer;
- Ability to write legibly; ability to follow oral and written instructions;
- Ability to get along well with others; ability to deal with the general public;
- Ability to work under adverse weather conditions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
