  • Operate and maintain the various campus 90-day hazardous waste storage facilities in conjunction with a second hazardous waste technician.
  • Transport hazardous chemical waste according to US DOT regulations from various campus points of generation to the appropriate 90-day hazardous waste chemical storage facility.
  • Handles chemicals and hazardous wastes which may be toxic, volatile, noxious, flammable, or otherwise dangerous.
  • Enter data into the EH&S computer waste tracking database programs promptly.
  • Classify and package hazardous chemical waste from all points of generation within the University according to US EPA, NYSDEC, and US DOT regulations.
  • Ensure hazardous chemical wastes are stored by compatibility group once collected.
  • Work closely with the UB designated hazardous waste vendor by providing the necessary data on campus hazardous wastes stored in 90-day areas. Vendor will use this data to provide packaging and shipment requirements.
  • Package all hazardous wastes into proper US DOT containers prior to off campus shipment for final disposal. Includes preparing labels, markings, etc. as directed. Waste must be packed per US DOT, US EPA and NYSDEC regulations.
  • Assist in loading of tractor trailer/cube vans, etc. at time of outbound shipments of hazardous wastes.
  • Maintain related records (i.e. inventories of hazardous chemical waste collected, categorized, transported and intended for shipment)
  • Maintain inventory of related packaging materials and contact Hazardous Materials Manager with order requests.
  • Stay knowledgeable of all applicable regulations in the field of hazardous waste disposal, i.e. rules and regulations of the US EPA, NYSDEC, US DOT and any/all other applicable regulations. Attend required initial and refresher training as directed.
  • Prepare monthly reports of hazardous waste operations, bulk supply requests and emergency response activities as directed.
  • Collect radioactive waste for storage and disposal. Assure proper and applicable procedures are used for picking up full waste containers from laboratories and delivering empty containers to laboratories.
  • Handles radioactive wastes and materials which may be mixed with chemicals that are toxic, volatile, noxious, flammable or otherwise dangerous.
  • Work with campus radioactive material users to provide correct waste containers and instructs in disposal methods.
  • Works in conjunction with Hazardous Materials Supervisor in ensuring radioactive waste containers are stored and managed properly in UB Radioactive waste storage area.
  • Stay knowledgeable of all applicable regulations in the field of waste disposal, i.e. rules and regulations of the NYS Department of Health (DOH), NYSDEC, US DOT, and the Code of Federal Regulations, specifically Title 10, parts 19 and 20, etc.
  • Assist Hazardous Materials Supervisor where needed in other elements of Radiation Safety Program.
  • Perform chemical bulk handling by combining various liquid organic chemicals into approved containers segregating the chlorinated from non-chlorinated, etc. Exact types of materials that require bulking will vary depending on waste collected.
  • Combine hazardous wastes and chemicals in US DOT approved packaging to minimize the number of lab packs per outbound hazardous waste shipment.
  • Perform weekly inspections of all campus hazardous chemical 90-day storage facilities per RCRA requirements. Maintain inspection records.
  • Deliver virgin chemical reagents/chemicals to various UB affiliated departments and laboratories working in conjunction with the Biochemistry and Chemistry stockrooms.
  • Prepare monthly reports of hazardous waste operations, bulk supply requests and emergency response activities on an as needed basis.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by Hazardous Materials Supervisor or Hazardous Materials Manager.
  • Act as a member of the University EH&S Emergency Response Team. Respond to chemical spills or chemically related emergencies as directed. Assist as necessary including cleanup and disposal of chemical waste that may be generated.
  • May occasionally handle biological infectious materials that have been spilled, or improperly disposed.
