Job Summary
Starting Wage: $29.34/hour.
Night shift hours: 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. from November 1st through March 31st. Day shift hours from April 1st through October 31st.
Performs intermediate skilled trades work maintaining the County's traffic control signs and devices and the County's highway road and bridge system under the moderate supervision of the Traffic Engineer or Highway Maintenance Supervisor.
ResponsibilitiesPerform the following essential functions:
- Install, repair, fabricate, and maintain all permanent, temporary, and seasonal traffic control devices and equipment used in signing.
- Carry out traffic control, flagging, and work‑zone set‑ups; repair or replace signs damaged due to traffic accidents or natural causes and document repairs.
- Re‑lamp and conduct minor maintenance such as replacing batteries on traffic signals and overhead lights; troubleshoot problems with computer hook‑up to cabinet and notify contractor of needed service.
- Trim trees and brush away from obstructed signs to improve visibility and safety.
- Operate locator device to check underground utilities prior to digging and assist maintenance personnel in locating underground utilities.
- Fabricate special signs not part of the regular inventory.
- Maintain department equipment, buildings, field sign, and sign shop inventories; use computerized inventory system; document all signing activities; receive and unload supplies and signs and store appropriately.
- Perform repairs and maintenance on roads and bridges, including bituminous patching, paving, sealing concrete repair and maintenance in medians/sidewalks, and crack sealing roads.
- Replace highway culverts by removal and installation of new culverts and/or installation of culvert liners in existing culverts.
- Place highway construction signs; remove debris and trash from roads, bridges, and ditches; repair and/or install bridges, culverts and guardrails; construct new roadway turn lanes and shoulders using computerized equipment.
- Remove snow and ice from roadways using chemicals and salt; identify, control and remove noxious weeds, tree and brush cuttings on roadways; load, haul, and operate equipment.
- Transport and stockpile road materials, including gravel and sand.
- Operate heavy equipment on roadways and construction sites safely.
- Interpret and understand highway construction plans.
- Be available for after‑work hours emergency callouts and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications & Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
- High school diploma or GED; two years of experience in highway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, and/or traffic signing or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous experience working with metal fabrication is preferred.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) with a Tanker Endorsement upon hire.
- First Aid/CPR, Competent Person, Forklift, Nuclear Training, Flagger/Work Zone, OSHA Log Safe Training certifications all within one year of employment.
Knowledge of environmental conditions and safety measures, proper signage, basic metal shop fabrication, basic mathematics, standard office equipment, computer and software programs, telephones, two‑way radios, GPS, digital camera, automated inventory system. Verbal and written communication, reading comprehension, interpersonal skills, ability to operate sign truck and various equipment, safety compliance, understanding of State and Federal regulations, ability to learn road maintenance and signing procedures, interpret route maps, manage time, maintain operating records, professionalism.
Physical RequirementsFrequent exertion up to 50 pounds, occasional up to 100 pounds; standing, walking, handling; speaking, hearing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; reaching; pushing/pulling; lifting; repetitive motions; exposure to fumes, chemicals, weather, vibration, noise. Requires vision and hearing, ability to climb or balance, exposure risk to electrical shock, blood borne pathogens. Must wear protective equipment as required.
