Night shift: 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. (November 1 – March 31). Day shift: 4:00 a.m. – 12:30 a.m. (April 1 – October 31).
Performs intermediate skilled trades work, maintaining the County’s traffic control signs and devices and the highway road and bridge system. Work is performed under moderate supervision of the Traffic Engineer or Highway Maintenance Supervisor.
Essential Functions- Install, repair, fabricate, and maintain all permanent, temporary, and seasonal traffic control devices and equipment.
- Perform traffic control, flagging, and work‑zone set‑ups.
- Repair and replace damaged signs due to accidents or natural causes, document and photograph repairs.
- Re‑lamp and perform minor maintenance on traffic signals and overhead lights; troubleshoot using computer hook‑up to cabinet and notify contractor of service needed.
- Trim trees and brush away from obstructed signs to improve visibility and safety.
- Operate locator device to check underground utilities prior to digging and assist in locating utilities.
- Fabricate special signs not part of regular inventory.
- Maintain department equipment, buildings, field sign, and shop inventories; use computerized inventory system; document all signing activities; receive and unload supplies and signs, and store properly.
- Perform repairs and maintenance to roads and bridges, including bituminous patching, paving, sealing, concrete repair, crack sealing, and medians/sidewalk work.
- Replace highway culverts by removing and installing new culverts or installing liners in existing culverts.
- Place highway construction signs; remove debris and trash (including dead animals and discarded appliances); repair and install bridges, culverts, guardrails; construct new roadway turn lanes and shoulders using computerized equipment.
- Remove snow and ice, apply chemicals and salt, control weeds and trim vegetation, load, haul, and operate equipment.
- Transport and stockpile road materials such as gravel and sand.
- Operate heavy equipment on roadways and construction sites safely.
- Interpret and understand highway construction plans.
- Be available for after‑hours emergency callouts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED and two years of experience in highway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, traffic signing, or equivalent.
- Previous experience with metal fabrication preferred.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement upon hire.
- First Aid/CPR, Competent Person, Forklift, Nuclear Training, Flagger/Work Zone, OSHA Log Safe certifications within one year of employment.
- Knowledge of environmental conditions and safety measures for routine maintenance.
- Understanding of proper signage for work areas, basic metal shop fabrication, basic math, and standard office equipment.
- Ability to learn GPS, digital camera, automated inventory systems, and other Department computer systems.
- Strong verbal and written communication and reading comprehension skills.
- Ability to operate sign trucks, boom, tractor loader, measuring equipment, power and hand tools, welding equipment.
- Ability to comply with safety practices involving traffic lanes, chemicals, and regulations.
- Capacity to work independently and maintain detailed operating records.
- Professional courtesy and ability to maintain positive working relationships.
- Frequent exertion of up to 50 lb, occasional up to 100 lb; standing, walking, moving hands, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, lifting, repetitive motions.
- Close, distance, color, night, and peripheral vision; speaking, listening, and writing at clear levels.
- Exposure to fumes, chemicals, outdoor weather, heat, vibration, blood borne pathogens, moving parts, high places, electrical shock.
- Ability to work in a loud noise environment.
