General InformationThis is a role within Student & Scholar Services supporting specialized or vocational education programs. The Instructional Assistant works under the direction of a licensed teacher and collaborates with staff, students and parents/guardians. The position requires the ability to react appropriately in crisis situations and to exercise initiative and creativity. The employee works within established systems and procedures, maintains organizational skills, and exercises independent judgment and confidentiality.
The role emphasizes collaboration to accomplish the district mission.
- Assist students under the direction of licensed staff, including tutoring and implementing classroom procedures.
- Reinforce students’ positive behavior and monitor/ administer assessments as needed.
- Reinforce organizational and note-taking skills; assist with technology usage for instruction, drill, remediation and homework.
- Help students achieve IEP goals; assist with non-medical physical needs or personal care/toileting needs as needed.
- Develop basic knowledge of software to support staff and students; learn and implement school technology.
- Support and supervise students during non-academic settings; coordinate and supervise off-campus programs when needed.
- Perform classroom-related clerical tasks; assist with lab setup and cleanup.
- Explain classroom procedures and materials to substitute teachers when necessary; preview instructional materials.
- Record data regarding student progress and review student information systems (attendance, IEP, 504, health information).
- Collaborate in assessment, academic and instructional support; promote safe behaviors and social development.
- Participate in professional development to enhance job performance; cultivate inclusive and equitable relationships with staff, students and community members.
- Must have or obtain State and NCLB Approved Paraprofessional designation per Illinois State Board of Education requirements.
- Must have physical ability to lift/move supplies, materials and equipment up to 50 lbs, and assist students as needed.
- Must be able to sit at a workstation for extended periods and move between areas of the building.
- Must organize and prioritize workflow; proficient in computers, office practices, procedures and equipment.
- Positive professional image and attitude; strong interpersonal and communication skills with students, staff, parents, visitors and the public.
- Aware of diverse student needs, including physical and social-emotional needs; adaptable to all subject areas.
- Valid driver’s license may be required; prior experience working with youth preferred.
