Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented and adaptable Staff Accountant to join our growing Construction company. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on environment and enjoys wearing multiple hats. The Staff Accountant will participate and manage core accounting functions such as AP, AR, and PO, as well as, support Construction specific financial controls, including licensing and insurance requirements while partnering closely with Project Managers and Operations.

Responsibilities

Accounting & Finance

  • Perform General Ledger accounting, including journal entries, month-end close, and account reconciliations
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis
  • Support annual audits, tax filings, and regulatory compliance

Construction Specific Accounting

  • Manage job cost accounting for labor, materials, equipment, expenses, and subcontractors
  • Review and process AIA billings, progress billings, change orders, and retention
  • Maintain work in progress (WIP) schedules and percentage of completion reporting
  • Oversee Certificate of Insurance (COI) compliance for subcontractors and vendors
  • Verify coverage meets contractual and project requirements
  • Track expirations and ensure renewals are received prior to payment or site access
  • Coordinate with project teams and risk management as needed

AP, AR, & PO team Management

  • Supervise and mentor the Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Purchase Order (PO) teams
  • Establish priorities, workflows, and performance expectations
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of invoices, billings, collections, and commitments
  • Review team output for accuracy, compliance, and alignment with project budgets
  • Improve AP/AR workflows and implement process efficiencies

Purchase Order (PO) Management

  • Oversee the creation, approval, and maintenance of purchase orders
  • Ensure POs align with approved budgets, contracts, and change orders
  • Monitor PO commitments, variances, and closeout
  • Coordinate with project managers and operations to resolve PO discrepancies

Operations & Administrative Support

  • Maintain accurate and organized financial records
  • Assist with accounting system enhancements and software integrations
  • Provide ad hoc reporting and financial analysis for leadership
  • Support cross functional initiatives and special projects as needed
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 3–6 years of accounting experience, preferably in the Construction industry
  • Prior experience managing or supervising AP and AR functions preferred
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with accounting software (Great Plains preferred)
