PRIMARY

FUNCTION

Check product for proper case depth and hardness by performing tests on process samples and analyzing results, as well as by collecting and analyzing data from in-line and off-line non-destructive test units.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Rockwell hardness tester, Brinnel microscope, cutoff machine, bench grinder, polishing wheels, belt sander, high temperature salt bath, hot oil bath, reheat furnace, non-destructive testing equipment, and miscellaneous hand tools.

WORKING PROCEDURE
  • Hand carries product samples from pick-up points to laboratory.
  • Sets up and operates equipment to perform physical tests on samples.
  • Prepares samples using abrasive cutoff wheel, appropriate compounds, laboratory-type furnace, salt bath or hot oil, and quench water or oil.
  • Checks samples for hardness using Rockwell hardness testers, and checks case depth using Brinnel microscope.
  • Grinds, polishes, and etches samples using grinding wheels, belt sander, polishing paper and bench-type buffing equipment.
  • Calibrates and sets up in-line and off-line NDT units. Continuously monitors operation of units.
  • Gathers and enters sample data for NDT programs to use as pass/fail parameters, and verifies accuracy from physical checks and data analysis.
  • Determines if more different data is required to improve accuracy or if there is a true potential problem with heat‑treated product.
  • Troubleshoots and corrects problems with NDT units, within the scope of his/her ability, prior to calling for assistance.
  • Makes written or verbal reports to supervision concerning results of tests-noting any unusual conditions.
  • Notifies department supervisor immediately if product availability for a production line will be delayed.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties such as assisting in locating and identifying production lots from which samples have been taken; checks questionable product; keeps equipment and work area clean and orderly; performs minor maintenance and non‑electrical repairs to lab equipment.
