Position: Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator - Upshur County

Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator – Upshur County, Buckhannon, WV. This entry‑level position is under general supervision and focuses on the construction and maintenance of highways. The incumbent will use a Steam Jenny to wash and detail equipment and vehicles brought in for repairs, and may also drive a light truck or vehicle during regular operations and snow removal and ice control (SRIC).

Operating various equipment such as fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, and hand tools, the operator may fill in for telephone and radio calls during SRIC, transport materials or fuel to equipment, and provide traffic control by flagging on job sites. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. The role is part of a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program and requires obtaining a commercial driver’s license (CDL) within six months of employment.

Pay Grade: 10H
Hourly Rate: $15.4913

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operate a light truck or vehicle.
  • Operate a fork truck to load and unload trucks.
  • Operate Endloader, Skid Steer, Rollers, Utility Tractor, and Brush Chipper.
  • Control brush and vegetation using hand tools and other equipment.
  • Plow snow using a light truck.
  • Perform minor maintenance on fleet of equipment and vehicles.
  • Answer telephone and radio calls during snow removal and ice control.
  • Flag traffic at construction sites.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six months of employment.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other motor‑driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of motor‑driven equipment.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the repair of motor‑driven equipment. Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn from example and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, repair work orders).
