Position: Transportation Engineer I-II (TPD Section)

Overview

Job Description - Transportation Engineer I-II (TPD Section) (2600033). TxDOT's Bryan District TP&D Sections are looking for a Transportation Engineer I or II based in Bryan, TX. You will gain valuable experience and work on major and minor transportation projects. You will learn project planning, roadway and bridge design, culvert analysis and design, and other engineering principles and applications that will shape the greater Brazos Valley area.

Salary and Pay
  • Transportation Engineer I: $65,104 - $106,634
  • Transportation Engineer II: $69,572 - $114,099

Minimum Qualifications Education

Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science; bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience

(Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and Certifications

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred. If performing underwater bridge inspections:
Open Water Diver certification. For Bridge Inspection: must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within one year of hire. Engineers licensed in another state must obtain Texas PE license within six months and sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Duties for a Transportation Engineer II
  • Negotiates fees, explains scope of work and monitors consultant design contracts.
  • Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts.
  • Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations, and assisting in transportation planning studies.
Responsibilities and Experience

Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Works with governmental officials and private entities. Establishes priorities to meet objectives. Assists Project Managers with resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and procurement while maintaining agency project objectives. Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.

Coordinates on design schematics and with property owners, utilities, attorneys and governmental representatives to depict the highway project's impact. Travels to project locations for on-site reviews and technical support.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Light work: lift up to 20 lbs at a time; frequently lift or carry objects 10 lbs or more
  • Repetitive wrist, hand, and finger movements
  • Standing for prolonged periods
  • Communication by spoken words
  • Pre-employment physical may be required for safety-related positions
  • Drug testing: pre-employment and random testing for Safety Impact positions
  • Note:

    Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulation does not authorize medical marijuana as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test
