GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs highly complex (senior-level) work overseeing residential mental health correctional staff who provide direct care to juveniles on a correctional residential mental health unit. Duties include overseeing daily operations of a juvenile residential mental health unit, facilitating youth rehabilitation, supervision of youth, and coaching their personal development in accordance with individualized treatment plans. May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.

Provides supervision and direct care for youth in a residential correctional facility, supervises other Juvenile Correctional Officers during shifts, and ensures safety and security of youth and staff. Supports, coaches, and mentors other JCOs to teach appropriate methods and positive ways to work with youth.

Works to help youth achieve progress in learning and applying methods to identify and manage reactions to stress and trauma and react in more socially appropriate ways. Facilitates unit programming, schedule, and safety protocols. Utilizes Texas Model interventions and other trained interventions to help youth improve safety, communication, and emotion regulation. Provides guidance to correctional staff regarding basic understanding of youth’s mental health and behavioral diagnosis.

Uses appropriate intervention methods to aid in learning and correcting behavior. Maintains a consistent effort to ensure safe environments and employs security measures when youth, staff, or others are in danger.
