OverviewUnder direction, performs engineering work on electrical substation engineering and transmission design, including physical, electrical, protection, and control practices.
Responsibilities- Electrical Substation Engineer 1 Under the direction of a Professional Engineer (PE), creates work orders for substation and transmission engineering and designs projects. Assist the manager with the review of substation and transmission design documents, including but not limited to one-lines/three-lines, physical layout arrangements, elevation view, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panels, conduit layouts, grounding layouts, cable schedules, bill of materials, and specifications.
Assists with preparing professional and accurate documents, including but not limited to RFPs, RFQs, and reports; and with the preparation of scopes of work, budgets, and Gantt charts. Assists the manager with coordinating projects with consultants, engineers, and/or contractors; and coordinates and communicates project activities with assigned supervisor. May assist in the inspection of project sites. Completes other job duties as assigned. - Electrical Substation Engineer 2 (in addition to the duties listed above) Under the direction of a Professional Engineer (PE), develops and/or modifies substation and transmission design documents, including but not limited to one-lines/three-lines, physical layout arrangements, elevation view, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panels, conduit layouts, grounding layouts, cable schedules, bill of materials, and specifications. Inspects construction sites for the preparation of progress reports pertaining to adherence to designs, specifications, and schedules.
- Senior Electrical Substation Engineer (in addition to the duties listed above) Creates and seals designs, plans, and equipment specifications for electrical substation and transmission projects. Coordinates procurement process; prepares bid documents, and evaluates bids received; prepares recommendations and presents reports as required for the purchase of materials, equipment, services, and other items associated with design.
- Lead Electrical Substation Engineer (in addition to all duties listed above) Develops and implements technical solutions in collaboration with the appropriate individuals/departments across BPUB in support of the utility’s objectives; prepares root-cause analysis reports and recommends corrective actions to the substation or transmission systems. Identifies key performance indicators for developing reports to summarize project status, including time, quality, and cost metrics.
Assist the manager in analyzing and interpreting new regulations and standards that may affect substation and transmission utilities, and provides recommendations for compliance. - Supervisory Responsibilities This job may include overseeing external contractors, engineering firms, technicians, CAD Drafters, and other staff members. May assume the duties and responsibilities of a higher-level engineering staff in their absence.
Knowledge of National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and applicable governing regulations and codes. Knowledge of computer systems and appropriate software and program applications. Knowledge of methodology and practices of substation construction, equipment, and operations. Knowledge of relay and control functional one-lines, Alternating Current (AC) & Direct Current (DC) elementary drawings, and wiring diagrams. Knowledge of CAD software applications. Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
Professional oral and written communication skills in English. Interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies. Skill in handling conflict and uncertain situations.
