Job Summary

The purpose of the Makerspace Advisor is to inspire our community to become “makers” and embrace knowledge through practical activities that develop skills and encourage inventiveness and creativity. This position will forge unique ground in its programming and offerings to library patrons. Recognizing that “Maker Space” activities are human-centered endeavors where people gather to make things with the aim that patrons will eventually make things together.

“Maker Space” activities will offer the latest creative tools accessible to the public but always incorporate the vital human elements that make technology come alive.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of more complex work routines, rules, procedures, or operations; ability to operate higher-level specialized equipment.
  • Promotes the Maker Space initiatives.
  • Assists patrons of all ages in using tools, equipment, material and software in the Maker Space.
  • Offers patrons one-on-one instruction and training on all Maker Space resources.
  • Keeps up to date on product knowledge regarding tools, equipment, material, and software to meet the needs of patrons in the Maker Space.
  • Research upcoming equipment and software to maintain the Maker Space as a groundbreaking endeavor for patrons.
  • Develops a training plan for staff on relevant equipment; informs staff of updates or changes to equipment or procedure.
  • Develops and maintains best practices for equipment and resources in the Makerspace as well as updating them when either change.
  • Maintains a safe, fun, and comfortable library environment.
  • Advise the Brownsville Public Library System in the acquisition of tools, equipment, material, and software.
  • Help coordinate public service coverage in the Maker Space.
  • Plan, develop, and schedule programming and outreach events, and coordinate with library staff.
  • Demonstrate flexibility to change direction/priorities based on community needs.
  • May serve as a backup floor supervisor.
  • A desire to meet the public and serve patrons of all ages.
  • Robust computer and technology skills.
  • Motivated to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Artistic proficiency and creative mindset.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Skill in planning and presenting appropriate programs for young children, teens, and adults.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships at all levels.

  • High level of self-motivation to create new services and programs.
  • Willingness to maintain a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
  • STEAM education background preferred.
  • Awareness of new developments and trends in public libraries.
  • Knowledge of gcode, CAD, and CAM is preferred.
  • Corel and Adobe suites is preferred.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree (no experience), or associate's degree plus two years of experience, or high school graduation or GED plus four years of experience.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Independence & Judgement

Average judgment; must recognize and resolve problems such as bad grammar, type of procedure to apply, where to refer call or correspondence without specified destination, when to change or sharpen blade on mower, whether there is a problem/malfunction with a piece of equipment that needs attention, etc.; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.
