Overview
The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of light public works maintenance and construction equipment. Performs all tasks associated with operating light equipment, inspects equipment, and conducts minor maintenance as needed. Operates equipment as part of a public works crew and works with other trades and equipment. May be required to perform tasks involving heavy labor as needed.
Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relieve peak workloads.
- Operates one or more light public works maintenance and construction equipment for most of the workday on an assigned basis. Examples of this type of equipment include tractors with mower attachments, dump trucks, rollers, zero turn mowers, water trucks, front end loaders, skid steer, grapple truck, chippers, and other types of light equipment deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor.
- Occasionally operates gasoline or other powered machinery such as cement mixers, wood chippers, air compressors, chain saws, and air blowers.
- Washes, cleans, and performs first level maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Performs manual labor tasks such as pothole patching, road shoulder repair, ditch cleaning, tree trimming and removal, and other duties deemed necessary by the immediate supervisor.
- May be assigned to operate heavy equipment or other specialized equipment on a temporary basis, including emergency situations or for training purposes.
- Regular attendance with the ability to work a five (5) day, forty (40) hour flex-time work week.
- May perform on-call duties at any time of day or night as required for emergency response.
County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.
Minimum Qualifications- High School graduate or equivalent general equivalency diploma (GED).
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in the safe operation of light maintenance and construction equipment.
- Must possess a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License B, with a good driving record and be insurable by the current insurance carrier.
- May be required to have Tanker endorsement.
- Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment:
- Florida Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Certification.
- NIMS/Incident Command Courses IS100PW
b, IS200 and IS700
A combination of education, training and experience may be substituted at the County's discretion.
Special RequirementsThis position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing in accordance with DOT regulations.
Required CompetenciesKnowledge of:
- Principles and methods of safely operating light maintenance and construction equipment.
- Safe practices and methods used in public works construction and maintenance activities.
Ability to:
- Perform minor maintenance, repairs and adjustments to equipment and document and communicate problems with the equipment.
- Perform manual labor.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions from supervisors or other management personnel.
- Interact with co-workers, supervisors and the public in a professional and courteous manner.
- Works in an outdoor environment at the work site in various weather conditions with potential exposure to dust, dirt, noise, rain and wind, and vibration.
- Works in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to the incumbents’ co-workers or others.
- Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses), walking, balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, handling, lifting, repetitive motion, speaking, visual acuity, standing, bending, stooping, driving, operating equipment, eye-hand and foot coordination.
- Heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
Pay Grade: 4
