Position: Maintenance Technician (Utilities)

Maintenance Technician I

The Maintenance Technician I is a semi-skilled position assigned to the Maintenance section in the Hernando County Utilities Department. This includes assisting in installation of new windows, plumbing and fixtures, re-roofing of structures, fence repair and installation, carpet removal and installation, general carpentry painting and drywall. The incumbent performs semi-skilled labor in a field environment and is responsible for maintenance of grounds, buildings, fences and structures at all water and wastewater facilities.

Hernando County provides a career path for advancement to Maintenance Technician II. Placement in job classification will be dependent upon the license, certifications, and years of experience held by the employee and/or the selected applicant.

This position is open until filled. The following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility but shall not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or otherwise to balance the workload.

Operates heavy equipment as needed including tractors, forklifts, and boom truck crane.

Emergency Response

County employees are required to report for work during a state of emergency and are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations which may include duties other than those specified in this job description.

Maintenance Technician I - Pay Grade 2 ($16.76-$21.80)

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent (GED).
  • Two (2) years of experience in semi-skilled building and grounds maintenance or a combination of education and field experience.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License with a good driving record as defined by current insurance carrier.
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications preferred. Forklift and aerial platform certification.
  • Must possess or be capable of obtaining within 90 days FEMA IC S100, IC S200 and IC S700 NIMS certification.
Required Competencies

Knowledge of

  • All phases of maintenance, renovation, plumbing, drywall, and roof repairs.
  • Safe practices and techniques based on experience with and utilizing heavy equipment around co-workers. Safe, efficient, and effective use of equipment, hand, and power tools.
  • The proper use of electrical test equipment and other diagnostic tools in building and equipment maintenance. Building codes for accessibility.

Ability to

  • Read and interpret sketches and blueprints.
  • Make time and material estimates.
  • Identify safety and structural problems.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with departments, associates, and the general public.
Maintenance Technician II - Pay Grade 5 ($21.11-$27.46)

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school graduate or equivalent (GED).
  • Five (5) years of experience in building maintenance, plumbing, renovation, repair and maintenance of mobile equipment and tools or an acceptable combination of training and experience.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations
  • Must possess and maintain a valid class "A" Florida Driver's License with a good driving record as defined by current insurance carrier.
  • Masonry certification, confined space training, and CPR certification are preferred.
  • Forklift and aerial platform certification.
  • Must possess or be capable of obtaining within 90 days FEMA IC S100, IC S200 and IC S700 NIMS certification.
Required Competencies

Physical Demands
  • Heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds off of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work requires stooping, bending, climbing, and walking; use of ladders and scaffolding, aerial platforms/mewps.
  • Ability to distinguish colors, sounds, smells to diagnose issues with buildings and equipment.
Environmental Conditions
  • Constant:
    Works near hazardous conditions, around dust, fumes, and heat.
  • Very frequent:
    Works near powerlines, water and sewer lines and other utilities.
  • Frequent:
    Indoor work. Works in awkward positions to repair equipment.
  • Works in an environment where errors on the incumbent part can lead to significant physical or mental consequences for themselves or others.
