Position: 2026 Summer Student Nurse Extern (SNE) at NYU Langone Hospital – Brooklyn. The program begins on Tuesday, June 2, 2026 and requires full-time work through August 1, 2026. Hires will be made based on unit needs. Two clinical references will be needed after an offer is extended. Please include clinical experience and GPA on your resume/application.
Responsibilities- Demonstrates an understanding of the rationale and basic principles of assigned patient's treatment/care procedures.
- Participates in unit-based quality initiatives under the guidance of a registered professional nurse.
- Recognizes own limitations and requests assistance when needed.
- Seeks learning resources for identified learning needs.
- Observes patient teaching.
- Participates in classroom or unit-based educational learning activities.
- Functions as a respectful member of the health care team.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the NYUMC Service Standards and incorporates them into the performance of duties.
- Cooperates and interacts with interdisciplinary team members when carrying out patient care.
- Completes written documentation of activities and observations, obtaining co-signature by the supervising registered nurse.
- Assumes responsibility for observing patient/family responses, changes in patient condition, and results of procedures performed, and reports to the designated registered nurse.
- Participates in the planning and evaluation of nursing care by active participation in conferences.
- With additional training and demonstrated competency, may perform additional clinical functions such as obtaining 12-lead EKGs and using a glucometer.
- Communicates support and responsiveness to patients, families, and other staff.
- Supports patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Observes and reports changes in the patient's condition and environment to the registered nurse.
- Observes the nursing process (assessment, documentation, planning, interventions, evaluation) under the direction of the registered nurse.
- Provides age-appropriate care by identifying needs and adapting interventions accordingly.
- Utilizes the written patient care plan/clinical pathway to deliver patient care.
- Provides oral suctioning and mouth care.
- Performs intake and output, applies clean dressings, and measures vital signs.
- Incorporates infection prevention/control guidelines and risk management in patient care.
- Provides assistance with activities of daily living and encourages appropriate self-care.
- Prevents complications of bed rest and immobility through nursing interventions.
- Provides for hygiene, safety, and comfort for assigned patients.
To qualify you must be a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Must provide proof of enrollment in a BSN program. BLS Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required. Demonstrates physical stamina, manual dexterity, visual and aural acuity to perform responsibilities. Preference given to those with a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Basic Life Support Certification (BLS).
To qualify you must have:
Completion of a minimum of one clinical semester with a medical/surgical focus in a BSN program; acceptable transcript GPA of 3.5 or higher and two clinical references from the School of Nursing; successful completion of a written screening questionnaire; BLS Certification through AHA.
