Job Summary
- Nurse Manager Emergency Department assumes 24-hour responsibility for overall assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
- Nurse Manager Emergency Department responsibilities include oversight and direction for the emergency department, and accountability for planning, directing, leading and evaluating nursing care within the department.
- Foster an environment of collaboration and respect with all other healthcare team members.
- Weekend and holiday coverage as needed is also a responsibility of the role as Nurse Manager.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
- BLS, ACLS, & PALS
- TNCC
- Minimum of five (5) years nursing experience of management and/or supervisory in the Emergency Department.
- Demonstrates leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent creative skills, ideas to improve existing programs.
- Ability to determine appropriate action in complex situations.
- Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling work.
- Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner.

- Collaborates with the CNO/SVP of nursing to establish nursing care standards and evaluates staff compliance.
- Identifies protocols affecting the patient population served and keeps nursing staff informed.
- Demonstrates self-development and keeps currents on a variety of clinical management and health care topics.
- Maintains a safe and caring environment for patients, family and staff that is conducive to positive health teaching and maintenance; develops mechanisms to assess same.
- Ensures equal access to treatment for all persons in need regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age, or sexual orientation.
- Develops long-term unit staffing schedules and ensures adequate daily coverage in accordance with established staffing needs.
- Develops measures and monitors unit operational performance metrics including agency and overtime costs, vacancy and turnover rates.
- Oversees the daily workflow, staffing, orientation, training and development of employees within the department.
- Responsible for the ongoing quality/performance improvement processes related to the emergency department.
- Promote and support a collaborative team approach in providing care for all ED and trauma patients.
- Approach others in a tactful manner and treat others with respect and consideration.
- Support and interpret policies, procedures, and objectives of the hospital.
- Monitors customer satisfaction scores and implements plans to improve scores.
- Monitors patient volume, quality of care, and performance of staff to identify areas for improvement.
- Maintains a departmental dashboard that includes information and progress on people, service, quality, and leadership.
- Responsible for investigating patient, physician and staff complaints/concerns and works to resolve the aforementioned.
- Maintains required competencies for self and all employees within the department.
- Participates in a professional organization.
- Educates and evaluates staff.
- Works with nursing leadership / Human Resources to counsel, discipline and terminate staff as needed.
- Educates staff in new and existing department procedures and systems (e.g., information systems).
- Creates and maintains an atmosphere of respect and courtesy toward patients, staff and colleagues.
