Position: Registered Nurse (Flex) - Operating Room

Overview

In addition to general nursing, it is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the OR and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations.

Responsibilities
  • Assesses patients at intervals as stated in policies and procedures.
  • Functions in the scrub and or circulating role during operative or other invasive procedures in accordance with scope of practice, credentials, privileges, education, and experience.
  • Ensures the operative procedure is being performed on the correct patient and site, side and level by: reviewing the operative schedule; reviewing the operative consent; verifying procedure site and side with patient; resolving identified discrepancy with surgeon and patient, prior to the patient being taken to the operating room; and participating in the pre-procedure verification, per-incision “Time Out” and sign out process.
  • Develops an individualized perioperative patient plan of care. Implements the plan of care by: protecting the patient from injury caused by chemical, electrical, laser, mechanical, and thermal sources and extraneous objects; performing accounting procedures to protect the patient from unintended retained surgical items; performing interventions necessary to ensure that the patient’s procedure is performed on the correct site, side, and level;

    managing the patient’s specimens in the appropriate manner; communicating the patient’s status to the appropriate parties throughout the continuum of care; administering medications safely and correctly; performing interventions to maintain the patient’s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels; performing interventions to maintain the status of the patient’s genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems and fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances at or above baseline levels.
  • Providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.
  • Actively involving the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process.
  • Documents nursing care accurately, completely, and legibly.
  • Collaborates effectively with other disciplines as appropriate.
  • Participates in quality review and performance improvement projects.
  • Uses problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with team members.
  • All other duties as requested.
Qualifications Education
  • Graduate of accredited nursing program(s).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred (Internal & 1199 SEIU).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (Non 1199 SEIU Candidates).
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, preferred (Non 1199 SEIU Candidates).
Experience
  • Minimum two (2) years' operating room experience.
Knowledge and Skills
  • Critical thinking, math, and computer skills.
  • Works as a team player.
  • Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Excellent oral and communication skills.
  • Decision making and problem solving.
  • Able to read, write, see and hear English.
Licenses, Certifications
  • Current NY State RN License required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association, required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association, required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association, required.
  • Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification, preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • An individual in this position may be exposed to: adverse indoor environmental conditions, blood borne pathogens, blood and body fluids, physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.
