POSITION DETAILS

New York City College of Technology (City Tech or the College) of the City University of New York (CUNY) is a comprehensive college of over 15,000 students in downtown Brooklyn, offering associate and baccalaureate degrees in technology and health related degree programs, other career-oriented degrees and liberal arts transfer degrees in its Schools of Arts and Sciences, Technology and Design, and Professional Studies.

The Office of the President at City Tech invites applicants for the position of Chief Campus Counsel. Reporting directly to the President, the Chief Campus Counsel serves as the College's campus legal counsel and member of President's Cabinet, engaging in a broad variety of functions including:

  • Provide advice to the President and administration on a wide range of matters, including the interpretation and application of University bylaws and University and College policies;
  • Serve as the College’s Labor Designee responsible for the administration of labor relations matters, including interpreting and enforcing collective bargaining agreements and handling grievances and disciplinary proceedings;
  • Provide legal advice regarding compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, including Title IV, Title VI, Title VII and Title IX, ADA, FMLA, Clery Act, FERPA, FLSA and the NYS Education Law; sensitive employment matters involving senior staff; students' rights and responsibilities; student conduct and discipline;
    College governance, and the development and implementation of College policies;
  • Consult with College administrators on matters involving legal guidance and decisions related to College activities and operating concerns, facilitating transactions between the College and external entities;
  • In collaboration with College administrators and offices and the CUNY Office of the General Counsel and Senior Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs, will review, revise, and facilitate contracts, agreements, and memoranda between the College and outside entities or individuals, including facilities-use agreements, internship agreements and memoranda of understanding with other educational institutions and programs;
  • As a senior member of President's Cabinet, provide updates and advise on relevant legal matters; participate in formulating College's strategic plan;
  • Investigate internal legal matters, and employee misconduct as assigned. Respond to subpoenas and other legal notices;
  • Advise student affairs regarding student issues, disciplinary hearing matters and due process concerns;
  • Train faculty, staff and students on University policies, state law, rules and regulations;
  • Work with the office of the New York State Attorney General and the CUNY Office General Counsel and Senior Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs on litigation involving the College and its employees, and coordinate with the CUNY Office of the General Counsel and Senior Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs to respond to discrimination claims from federal, state and local agencies;
  • Serve as College's Ethics Officer, ensuring compliance with NYS Public Officers law relative to annual financial reporting of relevant staff, annual honoraria reporting of all staff, addressing conflicts of interest and gift inquiries, delivering ethics training;
  • Serve as Records Access Officer, responding to freedom of information requests using the Gov QA system.
