Overview
The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the largest fire department in the United States and is recognized as the world’s busiest emergency response agency. The Department provides fire protection, emergency medical care, and other critical public safety services to residents and visitors in the five boroughs. FDNY members are sworn to protect life and property and educate the public in fire and life safety and disaster preparedness while enforcing public safety codes.
The Bureau of Fire Prevention works 24/7 to prevent loss of life and property from fire and other emergencies by identifying hazards, enforcing the NYC Fire Code, reviewing plans for critical systems, licensing qualified companies, certifying individuals, and educating the public. The Bureau partners with the Bureau of Fire Operations and the Bureau of Fire Investigations and coordinates with other City agencies on fire and life safety matters.
The Bureau consists of Fire Protection Inspectors, lawyers, engineers, explosives experts, and Fire Officers who work together to save lives in New York City.
The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a Full-Time Deputy Chief Inspector in the Bureau of Fire Prevention. Reporting directly to the Chief Inspector/Deputy Director (Explosives/Entertainment Unit). The successful candidate will, under direction and with a broad scope to exercise independent initiative and judgment, direct the Entertainment Unit responsible for monitoring and inspecting:
ResponsibilitiesThe responsibilities include, but are not limited to, overseeing Fire Protection Inspectors from Entertainment, Hazardous Cargo, and Fireworks Safety Units. The role also requires communication with the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) and following verbal or written instructions from the Director/Chief Inspector of the Explosives/Entertainment Units and the Deputy Director/Chief Inspector of the Entertainment Unit. The successful candidate must be available to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays when needed.
PositionASSOCIATE FIRE PROTECTION INSP - 31662
Minimum Qualifications- Five (5) years of full-time experience in one or more of the following areas:
- the manufacture or storage of explosives or flammables;
- the development of safety standards for the manufacture or storage of such materials;
- the inspection of premises where such materials are manufactured, stored, or housed to detect potential fire and explosion hazards;
- the design, installation, operation, repair and testing of sprinkler systems, standpipes, or other fire detection or extinguishing systems; or
- Education and/or experience equivalent to the first bullet above. Education from an accredited college or technical institution with specialization in fire science technology, chemistry, physics or engineering may be substituted for the experience requirement on the basis of one year of education (30 credits) for one year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years.
A Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York.
Preferred Skills- Displays knowledge of the Fire Code, Rules of the City of New York, and referenced standards in the Fire Code that pertain to film production, fireworks, and transportation of explosives.
- The ability to communicate with the public and colleagues in a well-organized, courteous, and effective manner.
- The ability to prepare reports of moderate complexity and special reports when requested by the Director/Chief Inspector or Deputy Director/Chief Inspector.
- Possesses an E-20 Certificate of Fitness.

Residency RequirementNew York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. Please discuss residency applicability with the agency representative at the time of interview.
