Overview
For over 125 years, Catholic Charities Brooklyn and Queens has provided quality social services to the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens, offering 160-plus programs and services for children, youth, adults, seniors, and those struggling with mental illness. Our Early Childhood Development Centers provide free Early Head Start and Head Start services to low-income families. Early Head Start serves children six weeks to age 3.
Through the Montessori approach, the center ensures children are ready for school by providing developmentally appropriate activities that promote cognitive, social, emotional, language-literacy and physical development.
- The Early Head Start (EHS) Teacher will lead the teaching team in planning and executing age- and developmentally appropriate activities reflecting the Montessori curriculum.
- Implement activities that promote social, emotional, cognitive, physical and creative development of children.
- Elicit input from the Team to complete written observations, progress reports, and other documents relevant to tracking children’s progress.
- Adhere to policies and procedures established by CCNS, ACS, DOH, DOE, and CACFP and comply with procedural norms and standards of attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality relevant to HIPAA.
- Ensure a learning environment based on the Montessori approach that helps children develop physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively, and creatively.
- Use information obtained via observations, conferences, tracking, etc., to design developmentally appropriate and individualized lesson plans.
- Ensure daily routines such as napping, eating, toileting, timely diaper changing, and washing are carried out in a healthy manner with respect to each child’s needs.
- Share information regarding children and the program with parents.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- CDA (Child Development Associate) Credential required plus a Study Plan to obtain an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education within 7 years.
- Associate Degree;
Bachelor’s Degree; or Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field (Elementary Education, Nursery to 6th Grade, Special Education, Students with Disabilities Birth to 2nd Grade; Child Psychology, Child Development, General Education with 12 credits in Early Childhood Education) preferred. - NY State Initial/Professional Certification - Birth-2 preferred. Various certifications for age ranges and special education in Nursery or Kindergarten to 12th grade preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of teaching experience in a pre-school or infant-toddler classroom.
- If not Montessori trained, must commit to enroll in the Agency’s Montessori training program within the first year of hire.
- Ability to nurture and care for children from 2 months to 24 months of age.
- Bilingual abilities in Spanish/English;
Russian/English;
Chinese/English;
Korean/English; or English/Creole preferred. - Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
- Able to travel to multiple locations within the five boroughs as needed.
