The Berkeley Carroll School is a Pre-K through grade 12 college-preparatory school of almost 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in New York City. Associate Teachers work closely with one Lead Teacher in our Kindergarten to 4th grade classrooms, collaborating on all aspects of classroom life. This includes collaborating closely with the Lead Teacher, working directly with students, and supporting classroom and school operations. Associate Teachers participate in all aspects of school life, including faculty meetings and professional development.
The ideal Associate Teacher is actively exploring or pursuing a career in education, with the ultimate goal of preparing to become a Lead Teacher. Associates are expected to learn pedagogy and curriculum content, and to be increasing their level of planning and instruction independence over time. Structures for this include close planning and observation and feedback with Lead Teachers, as well as goal-setting and workshops with the Lower School Administration, Instructional Coaches and Curriculum Coordinators.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with the Lead Teacher on all aspects of classroom instruction and student support.
- Learn the grade level curriculum, instructional frameworks and best practices in teaching, and work towards independence in implementing them.
- Provide direct instruction to students, with increasing responsibility over time.
- Assist with classroom routines and tasks such as record keeping, attendance, dismissal planning, materials preparation, and data collection.
- Support with additional duties related to the safe operation of the Lower School (i.e., arrival, lunch, dismissal).
- Participate (with guidance) in parent communication, including Back-to-School Night, report card writing, and Parent/Guardian conferences.
- Attend after school meetings and professional development sessions.
- Assume Lead Teacher role when partnering Lead teacher is absent.
- Experience teaching elementary-aged children
- Excitement for collaborating with a team of professionals to create innovative, integrated learning experiences for young learners
- Attention to the role of diversity and identity in a community, and a recognition of one’s own biases and how they may impact one’s perspectives and actions
- Bachelor’s Degree required, enrolled in a Masters Degree preferred

Salary and benefits are highly competitive and will be offered based upon experience and credentials. The salary range for this position is $51K-60K.
