Lower School Head Teacher

The Berkeley Carroll School is a Pre-K through grade 12 college-preparatory school of almost 1,000 students located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn in New York City. Our vibrant learning environment draws students from all over the city. Admission to the school is competitive, and both our parents and students value achievement and community.

The Lower School is seeking a full-time head teacher for the 2026-27 school year. Responsibilities will include the teaching of an inclusive curriculum while developing a strong classroom community of approximately 20 students. Additionally, the teacher in this role will mentor and collaborate with a full-time associate teacher. Candidates should be prepared to work with a team of committed and professional educators in a school that deeply values intellectual discovery, equitable practice, and genuine belonging.

• A Master’s degree in Education
• Head teaching experience in a Lower School classroom setting
• Deep knowledge of the developmental needs of elementary students
• Demonstrated understanding of contemporary pedagogy and use of evidence-based strategies
• Experience developing and adapting instructional materials and activities to support students with varying needs
• Ability to communicate positively between the school and families about student progress, strategies, and goals
• Ability to collaborate on interventions that address student needs, including implementation and support for positive behavior intervention strategies (PBIS)
• Facility with restorative practices, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), RULER, Responsive Classroom, and culturally responsive teaching
• Familiarity with science of reading and with DIELS assessments, and skill in teaching explicit, systematic, research-based core instructional curricula such as Fundations
• Familiarity with conceptually-based math curricula such as TERC, Contexts for Learning, and Bridges
• Skill in the creation of a safe and supportive classroom environment where all students feel valued and have the opportunity to experience a sense of belonging
• Skill in supporting students’ development of self-regulation and social-emotional skills
• Proficiency in using data to inform instruction and interventions, adjusting strategies as needed to ensure growth and success
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Empathy, patience, and a commitment to equity and student success
• Ability to collaborate effectively and professionally with teachers, families, and support staff
• Experience mentoring early career Associate Teachers preferred

Salary and benefits are highly competitive and will be offered commensurate with experience and credentials. The annual salary range for this position is $70K - $95K. This full-time, in-person position begins August 2026.
