Compass Charter School is an inquiry-based, progressive elementary school that opened in the fall of 2014 in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. We are committed to providing an experiential and democratic elementary experience to all children, with intentional access for children who typically do not get access to progressive education (children with special needs, children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and English language learners).
Our Integrated Curriculum centers sustainability in all forms: environmental, racial, and economic justice. Our staff works interdependently in collaborative teams and engages in professional inquiry (instructional coaching, reflection, restorative and trauma-informed practices). Compass enrolls approximately 350 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
The OpportunityCompass Charter School is seeking reflective physical education instructors who are driven to provide a joyful, rigorous, and justice-oriented educational experience to all children. Compass Physical Education Instructors are highly reflective, collaborative, curious, and bring joy and knowledge of physical education to their work with students and colleagues. Physical Education Instructors lead physical education classes for students in grades K-5 and collaborate with Classroom Co-Teachers to ensure Classroom Co-Teachers are able to implement skills and activities into their practice.
Physical Education Instructors also support the development of the physical education program at Compass, including community-wide events, activities, and programming for students and families.
At full expansion, Physical Education Instructors will lead two sessions with each K-5 class each week, for a total of 24 sessions per week. During the early phases of the program, Physical Education Instructors will lead one to two sessions per week with up to 12 classes, for a total of 12-18 sessions per week. The final number of sessions and schedule will be based on school schedule, implementation timeline, hiring, and budget.
