Berkeley Carroll is a Pre-K through grade 12 college-preparatory school with close to 1,000 students, located in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, New York City. Berkeley Carroll seeks a Middle and Upper School Physical Education Teacher and Athletics Coach to join our dynamic Physical Education and Athletics program. This position reports to the Chair of Physical Education and the Director of Athletics. We are looking for a versatile, energetic educator with a strong background in physical education and competitive athletics, and a deep appreciation for working with Middle and Upper School students.
Our ideal candidate should be eager and qualified to serve as the head coach of at least one varsity sport and, more generally, coach for two or three seasons.
- Plan and teach engaging physical education classes that emphasize physical literacy, skill development, fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, and lifelong wellness.
- Coach 2–3 athletic teams during the academic year, including being the head coach of at least one varsity sport.
- Create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that meets the developmental needs of middle and upper school students.
- Assess and evaluate student learning and growth, providing timely and meaningful feedback.
- Collaborate with members of the Physical Education Department to create lesson plans and develop curriculum, ensuring that Berkeley Carroll’s Portrait of a Learner —its essential skills and habits of mind—is consistently cultivated.
- Communicate effectively and proactively with students, colleagues, and families regarding student progress and well‑being.
- Participate actively in the life of the school, including faculty meetings, professional development, leading an advisory, and community events.
- Perform additional duties as assigned in support of the Physical Education program and broader school mission.
- Secondary (5-12) physical education teaching and coaching experience
- A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree is preferred
- Deep enthusiasm for middle and upper school students, physical education, and athletics
- Experience and expertise in physical education curriculum and instruction
- Experience coaching competitive athletics at the middle school and/or upper school level
- Commitment to reflective practice, ongoing professional growth, and continuous improvement
- Strong organizational, collaboration, and teamwork skills
- Problem‑solving and conflict resolution skills
- High level of cultural competency and a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion

Salary and benefits are highly competitive and will be offered commensurate with experience and credentials. The annual salary range for this 70k-100k.
