The Medical Director Psychiatrist is entrusted with key responsibilities that are critical to maintaining our high standards of care and operational excellence. This role is multi‑faceted, encompassing clinical governance, leadership, quality improvement, direct care and operational support. Medical Directors provide direct care within a service line and related leadership support, and serve as a voting member of the Medical Executive Committee.
Specific duties/tasks and time commitments may vary, and the overall primary responsibilities remain aligned as outlined below.
- Serve as leader and role model for medical staff
- Set a positive tone that is focused on providing quality care and effective cross‑functional teamwork.
- Promote a healthy culture that aligns with our mission and vision, and demonstrate our company values.
- Accountable for provider caseloads and track/unit coverage
- Managing and monitoring provider caseloads in conjunction with site operation leadership.
- Arrange coverage for absences, shifts in demand, and sudden changes, including on‑call.
- Provide direct clinical consultation
- Provide expert support in complex clinical decisions, focusing on critical areas like patient outcomes, including suicide prevention, and ensuring successful care transition.
- Proactively assess and address clinical needs, suggesting improvements to enhance patient care and service delivery.
- Provide ancillary expert consultation and input
- Collaborate with other leaders to support the productivity, education, compliance and performance of providers.
- Monitor and evaluate the performance of psychiatric staff, recruitment, orientation, and training.
- Doctorate in Medicine (MD) and DEA Certification.
- Board Certification in Adult Psychiatry required & Board Certification in Child & Adolescent is strongly preferred.
- Licensed to practice medicine in the State of MN.
- Minimum of 3 years of post Residency clinical experience required.
- Must be knowledgeable about adult, adolescent, and child psychiatric disorders, and advanced principles of abnormal psychology.
- Demonstrates the ability to treat all age populations as needed.
- Experience in Inpatient settings required.
- 5 years of Medical Director/Physician leadership experience required.
- Must be knowledgeable of Joint Commission standards and ensures that all programs operate according to Prairie Care policies, procedures, and Standards of Performance, in addition to the Joint Commission standards, CMS, state and federal regulations, EEOC requirements.
