Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Assistant Principal, the Gym & Health Teacher is responsible for creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive physical education and health learning environment that supports students’ physical wellness, social‑emotional growth, and overall achievement. The teacher will plan and deliver developmentally appropriate instruction aligned to state standards and NMA’s mission, while building positive relationships with students and families.

The ideal candidate demonstrates integrity, a strong work ethic, accountability, and a commitment to NMA’s core principles. Successful teachers understand and are responsive to the unique strengths and challenges of NMA’s diverse communities.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement highly effective gym and health lesson plans aligned to Minnesota state standards and NMA’s curriculum.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that promotes physical fitness, health awareness, teamwork, and positive behavior.
  • Foster a culture of learning that embraces the strengths, identities, and cultural backgrounds of all scholars.
  • Implement instructional strategies that promote high levels of student engagement and learning.
  • Model exemplary behavior and explicitly teach expectations using PBIS strategies and the RHINO Way.
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with students and support their social‑emotional development.
  • Collaborate with teammates, administrators, operations staff, and paraprofessionals to support student success.
  • Proactively communicate and engage with families regarding student progress and participation.
  • Administer informal assessments, maintain accurate records, and use data to inform instruction and adjustments.
  • Identify students needing additional support and implement appropriate interventions.
  • Maintain a growth mindset, professionalism, and a positive attitude.
  • Participate in professional development, coaching, and planning meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Current Minnesota teaching license (Physical Education and/or Health preferred).
  • Experience working in a school setting.
  • Experience in a high‑performing, fast‑paced educational environment is preferred.
  • Strong classroom and behavior management skills.
  • Ability to plan and deliver engaging, age‑appropriate physical education and health instruction.
  • Commitment to equity, culturally responsive teaching, and NMA’s mission and values.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Work Environment

This position involves active physical instruction in indoor and outdoor settings. Candidates must be able to demonstrate physical activities, supervise students safely, and maintain a structured and positive learning environment during gym and health programming.
