Position: School Counselor (2026-2027)

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide counseling support to students Pre‑K through 12th grade weekly and as needed.
  • Create and implement group counseling curriculum for students Pre‑K through 8th grade as needed.
  • Facilitate crisis intervention.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to create a supportive learning environment.
  • Maintain and write treatment notes of counseling sessions and student progress in compliance with school policies and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate interventions and provide referrals to outside supports when applicable.
  • Maintain informed and up to date on best practices to support student mental health and well‑being.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance counseling skills and knowledge.
  • Participate in student admissions observations, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in counseling or a related field
  • Current licensure as a Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Doctor of Psychology (Psy.

    D.), or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in the state of Massachusetts
  • At least 5 years of full‑time licensed counseling experience working with children and adolescents, preferably in a school setting
  • Ability to supervise and support the oversight of interns
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the counseling team, interns, students, families, and school staff
  • Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive school climate
  • Demonstrated ability to juggle competing priorities without direct supervision consistently, meet project deadlines, and meet high performance standards
  • Team player with strong customer‑centered communication skills and a detail‑oriented mindset
  • Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities and assignments
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team to establish and nurture effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Willingness to work as a team player and individual contributor
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask and meet deadlines with maximum precision and minimal supervision
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, non‑verbal) to build trust among constituencies
  • Commitment to actively promote and contribute to an engaging and inclusive workplace
  • Ability to be flexible, effectively manage stress, and adapt to changing work priorities in a fast‑paced work environment
Requirements

This job requires one to lift, carry, push, and/or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds, as well as the ability to stand, sit, walk, and effectively use extremities to reach, hold, touch, push, pull, lift, and carry. The incumbent must also effectively communicate (oral, written, and nonverbal) with others. This job typically requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing and is performed under minimal temperature variations in a generally hazard‑free environment.

Depending on the classroom assignment, this role may require one to relocate classrooms throughout the day and require ascending and descending stairs. Incumbents will occasionally be required to work extended hours, including after school, during evenings, and on weekends.

Dexter Southfield’s 36‑acre campus is composed of several buildings, playing fields, and outdoor learning spaces, which are accessible via internal and external walkways, stairs, nature paths, hills, and uneven terrain. This position requires one to transfer between these areas in all weather conditions.
